The year 2018 was a pivotal year for Neena Gupta. She played for Veere Di Wedding, Mulk and Badhaai Ho and the year ended on a positive note for winning numerous awards. And it looks like she appreciates this attention and is particularly present at the presentation of the trophies, which she has not done since her hit series, Saans (1999). The veteran actor said that throughout her career, she would only play "parallel" roles, so there was never any question of winning a prize. Neena, 59, also explained how male actors of her age still had the role of hero in their films and she also explained how her image as a strong and daring woman had upset her career. Extracts:

Your career seems to have taken a complete turn after Badhaai Ho?

I feel happy and a little worried because after all this, I can not do anything anymore. I just want to grow up now, so I'm expecting good and better work, and it's a bit frustrating.

You have already won two awards this season. How do you go about it?

It's good to attend shows. The last time I was busy with rewards, it was at the time of the Saans. Of course, I have never received a prize for my films because I have never had a role. I had a lot of "sidey", small roles in movies. I was just there in the movies but I had nothing to play. So, yes, I appreciate it right away.

How do you feel to be nominated alongside young actresses such as Deepika Padukone and Alia Bhatt?

Alia is like my child. Of course, it's a strange feeling. But there is always a taboo on actresses. Men of my age can still play the hero, but I will not understand it so easily. It will take longer to change. Main tab of pata nahi tak zinda bhi rahoongi ya nahi. There must be more stories around women. It is the only way.

You are also very active on social networks and regularly share pictures of your daily life. Do you like the space?

A little earlier, I thought that we should not publish personal photos. I am always very shy and not very active and I make mistakes. I have the impression that people are starting to know more about me this way, which is different from the image that was created about me. And because of that, I had to suffer a lot in my professional life. I have the impression that it helps me to change that and that I had to change that.

What kind of image are you referring to?

"Well that of a strong and daring woman who does things according to what she wants to do. And a strong woman means a negative woman in our movies. I had all the negative roles as a dominant woman in the household, but I told them that I wanted a female bechari role. In addition, discussions about having a child out of wedlock (referring to his daughter Masaba) continued over and over again. Wo child to wife ho gayi abhi bhi child hi bowl rahe hain.
