The film was applauded at the Sundance Film Festival during its first performance.
Jackson's family described the two men as "perjury", as they had previously stated in their testimony, claiming that Jackson had never badaulted them. A few years after the death of Michael Jackson, the two men resumed their version of the story by claiming that they were in fact victims of badual abuse.
Director Dan Reed had already told The Hollywood Reporter, "I did not characterize Jackson at all in the movie – I think if you look at it, you'll have noticed that it's a story to about these two families and that Jackson is an element of this story. But I do not try to characterize it at all. I do not comment Jackson. It's not a film about Michael. The film itself is a story of badual abuse, the way it is committed and its consequences later in life. "
