NXT TV
Broadcast February 20, 2019 on the WWE Network
on a listening of January 30, 2019 in Winter Park, Florida at Full Sail University
An intro teaser was aired in the match between Johnny Gargano and Velveteen Dream for the North American Championship …
The NXT theme was broadcast … [19659006] Mauro Rbadlo, Nigel McGuinness and Percy Watson were on the commentary. Aleister Black made his entrance to open the show. Roderick Strong made his entry without an undisputed Era. Mauro said the match was taking place because Roderick Strong had left Aleister Black lying at the end of last week's show after hitting him with End of Heartache …
1. Aleister Black vs. Roderick Strong. Strong dominated the first chain fight sequence with a high mount. Black returned to a vertical base and nailed Strong with a combination of Muay Thai hand-to-hand combat. Strong's got rid of Black by taking him outside. Strong gave Black one of his iconic backbreakers on the steel steps. Strong brought Black back to the ring and gave him a back breaker on his lap. Black tried to avoid a headache, but Strong quickly brought things back to the ground with punches and a side-hold.
Black stood up to attack Strong in the corner. Powerful inverted black with a powerful Irish bad and a dropkick in the basement. Roderick Strong opted for a Superplex but Black came out. Strong countered the bombing of Black with another of his signatures. Black countered a vertical suplex with one knee. Strong missed a knee hit and accidentally hit a turnbuckle. Strong Black hit with a combo of kicks and a dropkick in the basement. Black played soccer with Strong using his feet to hold Strong from a distance. Black hits Strong with a brainbuster for a near-fallen.
Black teases a black mbad but Strong is countered by a hit combo and a gutbuster. Black and Strong fought at the apron. Black hits with a nasty looking Argentinean military press in the steel post at the back of Black's head. The crowd finally woke up and began to duel for both wrestlers. Strong hit Black with a catapult in the bottom rope followed by a crooked flapjack. Strong has an imminent approach. Strong went to get a suplex on Black but Black pulled out a black mbad from nowhere for the win.
Aleister Black defeated Roderick Strong via Pinall in 8:26.
Nigel noted that whatever happens, Black still has the Black Mbad in his back pocket. As usual, Undisputed Era was absent for the game after match. Black hit O 'Reilly with Black Mbad but could not counter play the numbers of the other three. Ricochet ran to help Black erase the era of the ring.
Sereena Deeb was trying to make announcements about the new recruits at the Performance Center, but Shayna Baszler, Jessamyn Duke and Marina Shafir were screaming.
Percy Watson showed Mia Yim against Xia Li … [c]
John's Thoughts: A good counter based encounter. It's good to see Strong return to the singles division where he is able to become the ultimate NXT utility player. The crowd was strangely silent at first, but Strong's quick pace woke him up.
An interview with Bianca Belair talked about being close to the upcoming Women's NXT Championship. Belair said "uh … uh" to Io Shirai after the title. Belair boasted of being "irreproachable" (although that was not the case.) I know she said it was a "way of life", but what?)
Nigel McGuinness recounted the craft by defeating The Revival and The Bar this last week. Nigel also recapped other appearances of NXT wrestlers in WWE programs last week.
Mauro announced the return of the clbadic Dusty Rhodes in two weeks. Mauro announced that the first four teams of the clbadic and the next four would be announced next week …
The latest teams of the Undisputed Era, from the European Union, forgotten threads and profits from the street …
Clbadic was quite disappointing (because of clumsy finishes and wounds), but I believe that they have a division of the team really strong right now since they have raised a few teams and that Street Profits has developed a new style of fight. Sounds are really good too, but they can also be forgotten in some matches, no pun intended.
2. Mia Yim vs. Xia Li. Li managed to master the biggest Yim in the corner, which impressed him. Yim and Li then had a test of strength with Yim's victory. Nigel noted that Yim had won because of his size advantage. Li missed a monkey turnaround, but followed a reversal at sunset. Li avoided some of Yim's strikes, but this one hit him with a shotgun kick and a cannonball. Yim hits a combination of palm hits but Li returns with a bit of CQC and a tornado strike.
Yim drops it with a sharp cut to the edge of a knife. Yim modified her Eat Defeat version by kneeling the movement that she called "Protect Yo Neck" and that she used for victory.
Mia Yim defeated Xia Li in 3:53.
Baszler, Shafir and Duke ran after the draw they made in last week's women's match. Three random babyfaces failed for backup, but failed. I think they were Lacey Lane, MJ Jenkins and Jessie Elaban (Elaban was the one I was not sure she was not in her bad equipment) …
John's Thoughts: With Li representing the homeland and Yim representing the Blasians around the world, it was for me the most proud games that NXT could have organized (I'm exaggerating certainly). It's a bit odd that the women's games of the last two weeks are only settings for the fights against Baszler, Shafir and Duke, I like that they have the trio of heels through NXT. It sets a goal to overcome for baby surfaces.
NXT was about to advertise with Johnny Gargano doing bicep curls with resistance bands. Candice LeRae came in and said "you know what you have to do". She then said, "What the hell are you doing here?" To Tommaso Ciampa. Gargano told Ciampa that Gargano had won the title on his own and that he was about to show the world why he was calling Johnny Freakin's Wrestling … [c]
Percy Watson had sent information to an anonymous interviewer, this was former TNA interviewer, Jeremy Borash, for an interview with Matt Riddle. Borash talked about the Riddle documentary on the Performance Center YouTube channel (produced by Borash). Borash then questioned Riddle about his unorthadox approach, for example to wear hats and flip-flops. Riddle told a mentor that it was always better to calm things down than to reduce them, so he went out of his way. Riddle then explained how fun it was to get rid of Kbadius Ohno because he just wanted to ruin a good time.
Riddle said that he was now focusing on things as important as the fight. He recently mentioned beating Drew Gulak. Riddle then declared that he participated in all the NXT championships and that nothing would prevent him. Brother Percy Watson said that you could find the rest of the interview on YouTube.
John 's Thoughts: Even though they are in a hurry in the hour slot, it was great to see a promotion (and / or or thumbnail) air to erase part of Riddle's character. We did not learn anything new about Riddle, but it was not a waste of time either, because it was more an update on what Riddle really is.
Percy Watson also announced the promotion of Mia Yim against Shayna Baszler in an untitled game. had been installed earlier with the fight …
Velveteen Dream made his entrance wearing a dazzled dress. It remained about 30 minutes in the hour. Johnny Gargano made his entrance. There were heaps of supporters carrying printer paper placards saying "Johnny Champion" …
Kayla Braxton has been busy with the official introductions of the ring for the championship game (it's a pleasure to see this for a title in the middle of the map) …
3. Johnny Gargano vs. Velveteen Dream for the NXT North American Championship. Mauro reminded viewers that these two had already fought when Johnny Gargano scored his shot in the NXT championship on the line where Gargano defeated Dream to defend the title. Gargano and Dream were pretty well even early in the initial chain fight sequence. Dream and Gargano then exchanged their submissions. A camera showed that Tommbado Ciampa watched the game in a dark room (and did not watch the television at an awkward perpendicular angle). Back to the match, Dream hit Gargano's mouth, prompting Gargano to stay close to the ring for a break.
Dream transformed the test of strength that followed into a lateral head shot. After being attacked on the ground by Gargano, Dream provoked Gargano with his viper pose. Dream then turned his hips in front of Gargano before hitting Gargano with a few punches. Gargano replied with a knife chop. Dream was looking for a springboard, but Gargano sliced his legs to make him stumble. Gargano then mounted the methodical attack on Dream. Gargano hit Dream with a hangman's neckloop for two counts. Nigel spoke about the fact that Ciampa was manipulative and pulled the strings of the Gargano (but on Raw and Smackdown, they became again the best [almost] best of buds).
Gargano worked on Dream with variants of wingwing, including the use of the second chord as a point of support. Mauro said Gargano was removing a page from the quarterback book of his favorite team, Baker Mayfield and the Browns. Dream tried to make a comeback, but Gargano threw Dream outside. Gargano then called for applause and even did the Hulk Hogan ear thing. Song duels "Johnny Champion" and "Johnny Jackbad" followed. Gargano then jubilated and raised his fans (acting a bit like Ciampa to continue the parallelism). Gargano locked Dream in a modified abdominal stretch with a hand trap. Nigel pointed out the muscle groups targeted by Gargano, such as deltoids.
Dream countered the Gargano by a spinel effect at wide angle. Dream and Gargano exchanged shots, but Dream gained an advantage after a blow to the throat. Gargano dreamed outside and beat him with a superior punch. Dream opted for crooked DDT. Gargano missed a kick from Listo. Dream hit Gargano with the Assistant of Fame at the approach of the next incident. They showed Ciampa in his dark room again watching the game with a bit of suspense. Gargano escaped a Super Dream Valley pilot and then placed Dream on the second rope in a twisted DDT. After exchanging points of sale, Dream and Gargano clashed in a corner to knock the two men down.
Gargano nailed Dream with a superkick on the apron. Gargano opted for a DDT slingshot but Dream surprised Gargano with an uppercut. Gargano escaped a DVD attempt with a rotunda. Gargano hits Dream with a suicide dive. The dream strikes Gargano with a kick forward. Dream hit DDT on Gargano for an impending crash. Dream crash and burned during the attempt of Purple Rainmaker. Gargano kicked Dream for another relative. An "NXT" song follows. Dream gave Gargano a good punch on the top rope. Gargano used elbows to prevent a DVD. Dream has launched Gargano with a Super Dream Valley Driver Driver for a very good event. The crowd applauded this false finish.
Dream chooses a purple Rainmaker but Gargano rolled to the edge of the ring. Dream tried a punch, but Gargano caught him with a superkick. Gargano then threw Dream on the steel ramp and threw it into the steel steps. Gargano hit Dream with the DDT Slingshot for another good win. A permanent "NXT" song is produced. Gargano gave Dream some stiff-eyed lariats. Dream countered Gargano but Gargano came back with a lariat rebound. The two men exchanged pawns with Dream hitting the Dream Valley Driver. Dream then followed smoothly with another Dream Valley pilot. Velveteen Dream hits the Purple Rainmaker on Dream to become the new NA Champion.
Velveteen Dream defeated Johnny Gargano in 20:41 when he became the new North American champion NXT.
After the match they showed a shot of Ciampa looking from his dark room. After a celebration of Dream, they overlapped and returned to Ciampa who came out of the dark room shaking his head. Velveteen Dream celebrated his title victory to close the show …
Thoughts of John: Although in my opinion it is not as exciting as the last few weeks of NXT Television having worthy takeover matches, it was a very good match nonetheless very good. The beginning was a little slow, but not boring. The near-finals at the end were very well done and I think it was the near-traps that made this match. I believe that they tried to hide the spoiler at this match by recording the finishes with the victories of Dream and Gargano, but they decided to go with their initial registration, which was with the victory of Dream. I was a little tired after hearing Gargano lose his title so shortly after winning, but the shots from Ciampa backstage really made things happen. Getting to Ciampa and shaking his head is another chapter of Johnny Gargano's dissent in the dark. Because Gargano decided to be good to two, it cost him the title. If they accept the revenge clause, I can quite see the Gargano carrying it off by doing something bad.
A remarkable show with a strong main event. This episode had a good mix of development in the ring and character, which should be the goal of a weekly NXT show. I'll be here tomorrow with my NXT results list and the exclusive audio review of its members.
