More than 200 lions have died in the Gir Forest Region in the past two years, the Gujarat government said in the legislature Friday.

"Causes such as being struck by a train or falling into a well," he said.

To a question by Bhagabhai Barad, Congressman, the Minister Ganpat Vasava Forest, in a written response, said 110 lions and 94 cubs died in 2017 and 2018.

Of the 110 adult lions, 43 died in 2017 and 67 in 2018. Thirty-eight cubs died in 2017 and 56 in 2018, said the answer.

Mr. Vasava also reported that 331 leopards, including 75 small ones, died in the Gujarat forests in over the last two years, adding that the state government was taking various measures to prevent deaths from unnatural causes.
