We concluded peace with the fact that it exists a brand of movies that forces us to leave our brain at home. But Total Dhamaal third in the comedy franchise of director Indra Kumar, does not just ask you to leave your brain aside, he also expects to erase your memory before entering the cinema.

Erase all the memories of the best films that Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit made together. Forget the fact that Ritesh Deshmukh, Boman Irani and Sanjay Mishra are some of the best comic actors in Bollywood. And pretend that Ajay Devgan does not often deliver great poker timing. Because there is no way to get through Total Dhamaal if those best memories still linger.
If you think about it, Total Dhamaal is basically a remake of Dhamaal of 2007. Both films speak of a group of strangers and their insane pursuit of the stolen wealth hidden in a distant place. But remember, that was the premise of the 1963 clbadic. It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World. So, what you are looking at is basically a repeat of a scam.

Indra Kumar badociates his actors to chase 50 rupees crore in the loot. Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit are a couple who are constantly bickering on the brink of divorce. Ajay Devgan and his sidekick Sanjay Mishra are well prepared hooligans. Ritesh Deshmukh and Pitobash are firefighters who charge a premium for the priority rescue of residents of a burning building. ArshadWarsi and Javed Jaffrey are not such brilliant brothers and sisters who are fighting a battle with a smart car. And Boman Irani is a corrupt police commissioner, joined by his devious subordinate, Vijay Patkar.

The film is more like a race of obstacles than a coherent story as these couples cross the land, the sea and the sky to earn money. Total Dhamaal is actually a series of plays badembled to look like a conspiracy. Some of them are really fun, much like Ritesh Deshmukh, stuck on top of a building under construction with Pitobash, made false promises to God. Or, the role of Johnny Lever as a comrade who turned his auto-rickshaw into a helicopter. The real tragedy is to watch the easy chemistry of Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit wasted in a film that makes very little use of it.

As you probably know if you watched the trailer, everything ends in a zoo with a group of computer-generated viscous animals. Presumably, at that time, even filmmakers realized that no sensible adult could ever be invested in the film. The last act is therefore a shameless attempt to seduce a younger audience, potentially more tolerant.

I want to say here that I am not against comedies who demand a total suspension of disbelief. But even that requires thought, intelligent writing and light touch. Total Dhamaal has none of these things. It's a makeshift film that believes that the bigger you are, the better. Alas, this is not the case. From multiple remixes to racist and badist low IQ humor, to familiar gags and tropes, it's a lazy cynical film.

I'm going with half and a half out of 5.
