"Mithai", starring Rahul Ramakrishna and Priyadarshi, was shown in cinemas on Friday. Let's see what works and what does not work for this black comedy.
History:
Sai (Rahul Ramakrishna) loses his job when his frustrated boss fires him for indiscipline and inefficiency. He dreams big and wants to become Steve Jobs. Jani (Priyadarshi) is his only best friend for life.
Hell is unleashed when Sai loses the necklace that he bought to offer his girlfriend. He must find the robber who stole it in just three days should he get married smoothly. He and Jani undertake a long journey to find the thief. In this process they get help from Dude (Bhushan) and Deepthi (Swetha Varma).
Can we find the thief? What is the reason for the thief to steal the necklace? The answers to these questions are in the second half.
Analysis:
In one of the scenes, a character describes Donald Trump and North Korean Prime Minister Kim Jung-a as monkeys. Immediately, another character has a short-lived dream in which both leaders are seen as naked children. They urinate in front of the camera because they are stupid children. The dream is over. Every character in the scene is frustrated or makes no sense in this scene. This scene captures the essence of the long and useless series of movies called "Mithai".
The way in which author-director Prasanth Kumar engraves the characters is confusing. It's like they've had bipolar disorder. Their moods are incoherent, their language incoherent. For example, the character of Rahul Ramakrishna cries like a baby this minute and dances cheerfully a minute later!
They say "thala" and "thoka", you know. The film has neither head nor tail. We never understand if the problems of Sai and Jani are big or small. Are they worried? Are they frustrated? Are they in their senses? Or are they just stupid because they're drunkards?
In a scene, they behave as if it was the end of the world if they do not do something in 24 hours. In the next scene, they are laid back; they dance, they hug, they laugh, they drink. The whole movie is in this tone. Just imagine. Only the degree of madness continues to fluctuate.
From time to time, strange characters (such as Kamal Kamaraju, Ravi Varma, Aditi Myakal and Swetha Varma) enter the screen to further distract the audience. Their language, their behavior – nothing really makes sense.
Everything ends with a ridiculous summit with an okayish twist and a preaching scene. At this point, the duo's trip exceeds the audience.
Between Priyadarshi and Rahul, the latter scores points. This is a good actor. Priyadarshi seems to be more sarcastic than empathetic. It is overvalued for sure. The other actors do not make any mark. Bhushan gives an affected performance.
The film must be characterized by the music of Vivek Sagar. "The Liberation Song" and "Thappukokuraa" are very good, while the BGM is the most outstanding value. Ravi Varman's cinematography is ordinary, while the editing of Garry BH could have been better. A film that flickers with imprudent scenes. The Hyderabadi slang and music are the only things that give him reason.
