Bahr says …
Will win • " Roma "
should win • " A star is born "
No go all Sean Penn here, but "A star is born" should really win the best picture, although it probably will not. "Roma" is wonderful, but I'm afraid it's one of those movies that will not be picked up or even talked about in five or ten years, while "A Star Is Born" is not only great, but feels already like a clbadic. And it's something special.
Coyle says …
Will win • "Roma"
should win • "Black Panther"
The guild wins, which usually point the way, have been everywhere on the map, making it a hard call. The dynamic is with "Roma", partly thanks to a Netflix flash campaign (which has eyes for an Oscar like Jackson Maine wants another look at Ally) and because, well, it's a pretty film amazing. But "Black Panther" and the response it provoked perfectly embody the culture of films, which some doubted was still possible. Wakanda for February 24th.
Best Actress
The Nominees • Yalitza Aparicio, "Roma"; Glenn Close, "The Woman"; Olivia Colman, "The Favorite"; Lady Gaga, "A star is born"; Melissa McCarthy, "Can you still forgive me?"
Bahr says …
Will Win • Glenn Close, "The Woman"
Should Win • Olivia Colman , "The Favorite"
It is generally accepted that Glenn Close should have been awarded for an Oscar. Fortunately, she is truly wonderful in "The Wife", as a devoted wife of a Nobel laureate writer. A "career Oscar" is not a bad feeling and certainly not an "Oscar of Mercy". But love has no limit regarding my own appreciation of Olivia Colman's performance as Queen Anne in "The Favorite", which could be out of date. because Colman was not part of the schmooze circuit (she was busy shooting "The Crown", which is a perfectly reasonable excuse)
Coyle says …
Will win • Glenn Close, "The Wife"
is expected to win • Glenn Close, "The Wife"
There is no wrong choice in the pack – and a lot of people do not want to do it. others who have not succeeded. Colman, whose queen Anne was a delirium of emotions, may have its place. There will surely be voters who would like to see Colman thanking "my sluts" again, as she did at the Golden Globes. But it seems that it belongs to Close, whose subtle performance in "The Wife" is overflowing with the kind of complexity that can subsist (and, in the case of Close, has often disappeared) forgotten at the Academy Awards.
