Directors Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti delivered two impressive projects in less than a month. It was first of all Gully Boy, the rap musical comedy based in the slums of Dharavi, which revealed the cruel realities of the division. Now, they have launched together their first Web series, Amazon Prime's Made in Heaven, which is also receiving high acclaim from the public.

In a recent conversation with HT, the four directors of the series – Zoya, Reema, Nitya Mehra and Alankrita Srivastava – talked about their new series and Gully Boy, including a character who puzzled many viewers– Murad's father.

Vijay Raaz plays the violent father of Murad, Ranveer Singh, in the film. He brings home a new wife, while the first is reduced to a housekeeper. He strikes her when she protests, belittles her when she asks for respect. He crushes his son's dreams, tells him to lower his head and not dare to think he might be special.

Throughout the film, he felt like the only character who deserves our hate. However, towards the end of the film, we feel the pressure that the world has built around him and the walls that enclose him so tightly that he can no longer dare to dream of a brighter future. We start to sympathize with a woman drummer.

About his intentions with the character, Zoya said that he was supposed to receive our sympathy. "As a system and as a society, we create people like that. The clbad system as a whole has oppressed so many people and given them such a lack of opportunities. They are fed stories so strong that it is where you belong and that's where you are. Because you belong to this community, you only have these options. Because you do not have the opportunity to study, you do not have the opportunity to improve. And you tend to believe that's what we gave you. I think that at some level we colonized our people. It's the worst thing you can do when you colonize someone's dream. Make believe to a whole population that she does not deserve better … I think he is a victim. It oppresses the weak and the oppressed, "she said.

"The system oppresses him so much that he tyrannizes his little cave. So if he manages to beat his wife, he will. Because it's the only place in this country where he has the least power, "she added.

According to Zoya, the turning point is announced in the new house of Murad. "Finally, he realizes that his son has become a man and will not listen to him anymore. He operates out of fear. It's an absolute, abject fear, where he says nothing is going to happen to you and you're going to lose that opportunity you've had. Because in his head he is not open and he has no idea that things can be different. So that's where we come from, "she said.

Gully Boy is embellished with more great characters, interpreted to perfection by truly talented actors. The film has received worldwide acclaim during its screening at the Berlin Film Festival and many have even described it as one of the best traditional Hindi films of recent times.
