The drama Kalank, due out in April, was to be directed by Karan Johar, starring Shah Rukh Khan, Ajay Devgn, Kajol and Rani Mukerji. KJo had revealed in his book An Unsuitable Boy that Kalank was conceptualized 15 years ago.
"When my father was alive, I was writing a love story that unfolded at the time of the pre-scores. But the canvas was too big, it had to include Shah Rukh, Ajay, Rani and Kajol. It was houses and had a Hindu-Muslim angle. It was a very strong subject, which would be called Kalank, "writes Karan in his book.

The teaser video of Kalank was launched Tuesday at a major event in Mumbai, which the entire cast of the film had attended. It was an instant hit online and has already garnered over 14 million views on YouTube.
Karan said at the launch of the trailer: "Kalank is a film that interests me and me and my dad since 2003 and has been bothering me ever since. It was difficult without him to touch this movie and one day I decided to do it. I must say that this was possible thanks to Sajid Nadiadwala and Vijay Singh. It's a pleasure and I plan to work on more movies with him in the future.
