upcoming release of Lakshmi's NTR. The political drama is based on an episode in the life of NT actor-politician Rama Rao. Prior to publication, Varma recently interacted with the media.
Here are excerpts from the conversation:
Q. You tweeted about the misunderstanding between you and the CBFC. What happened?
We have heard that the Council of Censorship was not ready to watch our film before the first phase of elections. So, I reacted to that because it's pure discrimination. The electoral commission had made it clear that the film's release was unrelated to the elections. I decided to gather a press to tackle the same problem. However, later, I realized that we had misunderstood the position of the CBFC. As a result, we canceled the press meeting.
Q. Earlier, the film was due out on March 22. What was the reason for the postponement of the exit?
We were not technically ready to release the film. So we pushed back the release date.
Q. You did not want to make the film yourself?
Realize this is not like before. I am on the set to make some decisions in principle and take care of the shooting process indoors and outdoors. Agasthya Manju is a very competitive guy.
Q. What motivated you most in your research on Lakshmi's NTR?
First, the relationship between NTR and Lakshmi Parvathi. Second, the plot factor in the story and, finally, is the suffering of NTR and the way he died after suffering a huge mental trauma. The three factors motivated me. I think these three elements are integral to the story.
Q. If you were the director of Nandamuri Balakrishna's starring film NTR, how would you have treated the film?
When they (Nandamuri Balakrishna) approached me, I did not want to do the biographical film without this aspect (Lakshmi Episode Parvathi). In my opinion, there should be an emotional conflict to make a biopic. You do not need a biopic when you want to make a movie in a straight line.
NTR's life lasted only 70 years. He was a hero in both his film and his political career. From the creation of the Telugu Desam Party to the immediate victory to its rise and fall in the movies, NTR had some examples, but it quickly recovered. But after the entry of Lakshmi Parvathi into his life, he experienced a decline that eventually resulted in his death. That's why it's the most important part of his life.
Q. Do you think that the publication of Lakshmi in NTR will be a problem?
We live in a democratic country. I believe one hundred percent that it is impossible to prevent the release of our film. As Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, I think Chandrababu Naidu has a duty to protect law and order. It is his responsibility to protect legitimate constitutional rights. I therefore firmly believe that Naidu will ensure the smooth running of the film.
Q. How was an actor chosen for the role of NTR?
To represent the character of NTR, we needed an actor capable of capturing the expressions and body language of the legend. I was very clear about the fact that we needed a new face to play in the film because, to my knowledge, a new actor has great credibility while representing a real character. So we strung into the theater artist Vijay Kumar. Before starting filming, he attended rigorous role preparation workshops.
Q. We heard that the music of the film was also the subject of much attention.
The music is an integral part of the film, especially because NTR comes from the context of the film. In addition, I think it is a kind of platonic love story (Lakshmi Parvathi and NTR.) So I wanted a very clbadic atmosphere for all the music of the film. They are also very well read and you learn to know it through their communications. So, the songs and the music are what comes from the thought process of the characters.
Q. Does Lakshmi's NTR portray Lakshmi Parvathi as innocent?
The main goal of Lakshmi NTR is to find out why NTR was attracted to Lakshmi Parvathi. We have to look at it from the point of view of NTR. What did he see in her? What the film describes is the truth that I understood or that I got to know the personality on which it rests. When you watch the movie, you may not agree with it because your truth may be something else.
Q. You said that this film was very special in your career.
NTR is popular among Telugu around the world. So filming an extremely personal tragedy of his life was a difficult and moving task. This film is a responsible job. Here, the responsibility was to tell him the truth and pay homage to him in an honest way with his emotion. That's why this movie is very special for me.
Lakshmi's NTR will be released on March 29th.
