You may have heard the "Midas touch" idiom regularly. But Akshay Kumar has experienced it closely in his career, as he is clearly on top with box-office winners back-to-back, including his latest success, Kesari. The actor, however, refuses to "think too much about it" and feels "only grateful". HT City taught Akshay that he had changed careers during his career, competing with young people, his son Aarav, and so on.
Kesari was a victim of failure – both critical and commercial. You must be really happy about it.
More than anything, I am extremely grateful, not for the success of the film, but for the chosen one, who had the opportunity to participate in such a fantastic story. To be honest, I feel really lucky to be able to tell people such a courageous and inspiring story.
At first glance, you seem to be taking on difficult roles right now.
Shayad abhi samajh aayi hai, abhi akal aayi hai (smiles). But for me, it's simple: if I'm offered good roles now, I take them. Earlier, I would not have such roles, so I could not do them.
Since the special issue 26, your film choices have changed significantly. So, are you thinking of taking special types of movies now?
Not at all! I make all kinds of movies. If I do Kesari, I will also see myself in Housefull 4. I do not want to stick to a single image. The idea is to get out of any kind of image or perception. When I entered the industry, I was called an "action star". So I feel like a scar: reh gaya dil mein. That's why I want to change characters and alter my image permanently. I just can not be stuck with one image.

In 2019, you're 28 years old as a Hindi film actor. You look back? And have you ever had the impression that this trip could have been different?
I am very happy and happy with my trip until now. I've learned a lot by falling over and over again and even my so-called bad movies and those that fail. I do not think I have always wanted a flawless career. I think the ups and downs of your career are very important. Even a clock goes up and down constantly and likewise, the cycle of day and night continues unabated. I learn a lot of these things.
You recently said that you are working extremely hard to maintain the same level of energy as other young people. But it must be extremely difficult …
Yes, but it is very important. Keeping oneself "maintained" and having the same level of energy as the 20-year-old requires a lot of work. People say, "Arrey, Akshay is sleeping and getting up early." But if I'm not this routine, when will I work on myself. Yeh nahi kiya to baap ya bhai ke his role milenge phir (laughs).
So, do you consider young people as competitors?
Yes, definitely. I consider myself a newcomer only. I just enter the industry (laughs).
You have everything: money, fame and power. However, what makes you continue with so much enthusiasm?
It is very difficult to answer. But I feel good roles, great characters and captivating stories allow me to continue. I have the chance to play heroic characters like Ishar Singh and Prithviraj Chauhan; and it's also great that I'm starting to work with very talented directors.
It is clear that Kesari does not look like an easy movie. What pushed you to go ahead?
I was very excited from the start. The best part is that it's a true story. When we watch a movie like 300 (2006), we are excited about it even if it is a fictional story. But our film is the story of a real historical event. Yeh Itihaas mein hai lekin itihaas is a board that nahi hai me. Very few people are aware and I am very happy to have the opportunity to tell this story. Havildar Ishar Singh [played by Akshay] and the other 20 sardars fought for their country and his honor, knowing very well that they were destined for death. The bravery of Isya Zyaada Ki Kahaani aur Kya Hogi.
Are you surprised to find that no Bollywood filmmaker has taken over this story until now?
Yes, because we shot many historical films such as Mughal-E-Azam (1960), etc., but no one has brought this story to the attention of people or made a film on it. I think there is no bigger battle story than this one. When you search Google for the "10 greatest battles in history," you'll find the battle of Saragarhi in this list. When you started working on the film, two other films were also planned for the Battle of Saragarhi. Were you aware?

Up to now, many have commented that you are the only actor to succeed three to four films a year. Are you already afraid of exhausting yourself?
If I burn, I will leave [the industry]. Why should I start thinking about it now? Jab tak gaadi chal rahi hai to chal rahi hai. But there is no planning as such. Even before you feel exhausted, I think the audience will only send you the message. I am happy to see that the main khud Hi chala jaaunga, because I will get to know each other. Having said that, I feel that it's all part of perception. The idea should be to work hard, play separate characters and continue your work.
Nowadays, many actors think of it. Do not these thoughts ever cross your mind?
Feel free to think about this: burn the stone, kah fikar karke, main movies, nahi karunga. So, I will say to myself then: "ab se, I will only make one film a year to avoid getting burned". But if this movie does not go well, then I'm going to burn myself differently (laughs). In such a situation, if I go back to a filmmaker for a project, he will have the impression of saying "chal hat yahaan se (laughs)".
But on the contrary, exhibitors and distributors are happy that you make several films. That means more business for them …
I think we need to make good movies with the right budget and on time, so that people – studios and producers included – save and make money. It's good for me too because they will tell me if I win them money. Two things destroy a film: a heavy budget and high interests [on invested money].
Suddenly talking about politics …
That's totally wrong. I do not know what the future holds but Abhi Toh Bilkul Nahi Jaa Raha Hoon is the main political leader. I am very happy to make movies. I will enter politics.
Recently, talks have begun to find out if your son, Aarav, will follow you in your footsteps …
He is no more than a 16-year-old who enjoys his life. It is not necessary to discuss his career for the moment and to put pressure on him. I think [kids feeling pressure] will only happen if the parents, in a way, impose some kind of burden. I am very clear that I am well, that my children want to become a painter, doctor or open a restaurant. My father never put pressure on me. He was like "if you're interested in sports and karate, and want to be like Bruce Lee, go ahead, but at least get half Bruce Lee (laughs)." Aaj wahi cheez kaam aayi na simple.
