New Delhi:

About 100 members of the Indian film community appealed to the Indians not to vote for the Bharatiya Janata (BJP) in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Filmmakers, mainly known for their independent film, have published the call on the website www.artistuniteindia.com, with a message stating that filmmakers have come together to "protect the country's democracy".

The 103 signatories include well-known names such as Vetri Maaran, Anand Patwardhan, Sbadkumar Sasidharan, Sudevan, Q, Deepa Dhanraj, Gurvinder Singh, Pushpendra Singh, Kabir Singh Chowdhry, Anjali Monteiro, Mor Praveen, Devashish Makhija, Aashiq Abu and the publisher, Bina Paul, among others.

"Our country is going through an extremely trying time and, although culturally alive and geographically diverse, we have always remained united as a nation, it is a great feeling to be a citizen of this wonderful country … But all of this is at stake now. "Fascism threatens to hit us hard with all its might if we do not choose wisely in the next election of Lok Sabha," reads the statement.

They also report the reasons for their decision to take a stand against the political party. Some of the reasons are "the unleashing of polarization and political hatred, vigilance of cows, marginalization of Dalits, Muslims and farmers and strengthening of censorship".

"As we all know, since the BJP came to power in 2014, things have changed and only for the worse," said the appeal.

Filmmakers said that patriotism was "the badet" of the BJP.

"Anyone or institution that raises the slightest disagreement is labeled" anti-national. "Patriotism is the way they develop their vote bank."

The statement ends with an appeal.

"We urge you all to do your utmost to prevent this evil regime from coming back to power, that your mandate is to choose a government that respects the Indian Constitution, protects our freedom of speech and expression, and Abstains from any censorship. "
