Veteran filmmaker J Mahendran, known to have inspired realism in Tamil cinema and given superstar Rajinikanth his career breakthrough with Mullum Malarum [1945900]. , died in Chennai Tuesday at the age of 79, report the news agencies PTI and IANS. He was seriously ill and had been treated at Apollo Hospital for more than a week, said Mahendran publicist at IANS. Monday night, he was brought home. "He died early this morning at his home, he was brought back from the hospital last night after being treated for a week, and the cremation services will take place tonight," the publicist told IANS.
The last sacraments of J Mahendran will be held later in the day at his suburban residence. Mahendran was introduced to the film world as a critic while he was working as a sub-editor in a Tamil magazine during his years of study.
Born in 1939, Mahendran began his career as a screenwriter and debuted with the 1966 Tamil film Naam Moovar. He then wrote a few more films before plunging into directing with the critically acclaimed 1978 film, Mullum Mallarum, starring Rajinikanth in the lead. Later, Mahendran and Rajinikanth worked on films like Kaali and Johnny .
The director's popularity culminated with his films Uthiri Pookkal . (1979) and . Nenjathai Killathey (1980). Uthiri Pookal with Vijayan, Ashwini and Madhu Malini, is still considered one of the best Tamil films to be made.
Mahendran made only 12 films during his career with the film Arvind Swamy, made in 2004.
Saasanam being his last.
In recent years, Mahendran had pbaded to the act. He played a pivotal role in Kamaraj (2004), Petta in front of Rajinikanth and Vijay Theri . He was last seen in the Tamil film Boomerang which came out on March 8.
Mahendran is also the founding member of the Blue Ocean Film and Television Academy in Chennai. G Dhananjayan, the long-time badociate and producer of the director, said Mahendra had redefined Tamil cinema at a time when it was dominated by the tendency to offer long dialogues.
"He brought a touch of realism to Tamil cinema, and Mahendran is the ancestor of the realist Tamil cinema," said Dhananjayan.
Directors such as AR Murugadoss, Lakshmy Ramakrishnan and Pa Ranjith mourned the death of Mahendran. They took on Twitter to express their condolences.
