Shazam! goes out in the cinemas today. The latest addition to the CESD was directed by David F. Sandberg and appears to be one of DC's lightest movies. If you do not know who this DC superhero is and how he is in the CUSD, we've introduced 5 things to know before watching the movie.

Shazam was the captain Marvel First
Although the character is DC, he has a connection with Marvel Comics in that he's Called Captain Marvel before Marvel took the name. The reason for this unlikely link goes back to a brand problem between the two comic book franchises. Captain Marvel of DC first appeared in Whiz Comics No. 2 in 1940.
Marvel was not very happy that a rival comic editor uses his name for a superhero , DC having decided to still call Captain Marvel in the stories but that the comics would bear the name of the wizard Shazam who gives his abilities to the superhero.
In 2011, DC restarted the character and abandoned the name of Captain Marvel, so that it was known as Shazam.
He's a Kid
As you may have figured out in trailers and other promotional materials, this DC superhero is not as dark as Batman nor as serious as Superman. But that does not mean that he's not a stout superhero with great abilities.
Billy Batson (described by Asher Angel in the film), a young orphan, is granted powers by a sorcerer who allows him to acquire superhuman abilities by pronouncing the name of "Shazam". The magic also transforms him into an adult described by Zachary Levi in the film.
Abilities
By pronouncing the wizard's name, he can turn into a superhero or return to Billy. But it's not just a name, it's actually an acronym for the superhero's abilities that he draws from six gods:
- S – for the wisdom of Solomon;
- H – for the strength of Hercules;
- A – for the endurance of Atlas;
- Z – for the power of Zeus;
- A – for the courage of Achilles; and
- M – for the speed of Mercury, which also gives him his flying abilities.
Villains
The character had many enemies while defending Fawcett City (a fictional city of DC), Black Adam being the most famous of the comics.
In the film, the main villain is Dr. Sivana, described by Mark Strong. He is the very definition of a mad scientist and designs super-weapons to overcome his frustrations over the world that he feels do not appreciate his genius.
How this fits into the DCEU
Including this new film, there are 7 films in total in DC Extended Universe, including:
- Man of Steel (2013),
- ] Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016);
- Suicide Squad (2016);
- Wonder Woman (2017);
- Justice League (2017);
- Aquaman (2018).
