The teaser of Kabir Singh, born Arjun Reddy, is out and there is both good news and bad news. The bad news is that Shahid Kapoor just seems to be echoing Vijay Devarakonda's decadent, debauched and hedonistic movements of the original Telugu movie. The good news is that Shahid Kapoor plays Vijay Devarakonda very well.
Although the reason why an actor as clever as Kapoor would simply like to walk in the footsteps of another actor is confusing. But then, things did not go exactly to gung-ho for Shahid's career. Her last outing as Deepika Padukone's royal husband at Padmaavat found her as lost as Shakti Kapoor would be like Mahatma Gandhi.
In Kabir Singh, Shahid does not seem to have been deformed, he threw out all the bazaar. To embody a man as messed up as Arjun Reddy / Kabir Singh, you have to have courage. But we still see Devarakonda in every teaser movie, including one in which Kiara Advani gets a prude peck on the cheek of this uncontrollable rudderless surgeon who gets drunk dead and kills a man on the table. Do we really need a reminder of the life story of this despicable man? We loved Arjun Reddy for his freshness, his malice and his sense of reverse morality. The same route seems exhausting.
For fans, Arjun Reddy, under another name, is Arjun Reddy. And imagine that another actor, with the exception of Vijay Deverakonda, taking this decadent route is unachievable.
