Season 8 of Game of Thrones is officially launched and we are already in troubled waters. Episode 1 Winterfell was essentially about setting the stage and meeting key players. There were important reminders at the pilot episode, as promised. Now, many of them have stories that can make things super awkward, and episode 1 did not disappoint. Some of the meetings we are looking for have taken place, others not. Without further ado, here is everything that happened, in chronological order.
Warning: The rest of the article contains incorrect information, so if you're not still at Season 8, stop reading!
1. Jon and Bran
Jon Snow remembers Bran as a sweet, worried, curious boy. Bran was in a coma when he left Winterfell in S1 E2. But Bran has changed (that's the least we can say), and although Jon had to hear about his new abilities, it remains to know all the implications. He salutes Bran like a loving big brother: " You are a man now! " Bran's Cold " Almost " scares her properly.
From Bran's point of view, his Jon's welcome is rather warm considering his behavior last season. There is even a hint of a smile this time around. Well, almost.
2. Tyrion and Sansa
As for difficult meetings, this is just above. Sansa and Tyrion married, despite their wishes, in season 3. But Littlefinger married Sansa again to Ramsay Bolton. Now Ramsay is dead and Sansa is Lady Stark of Winterfell. So, are they still married?
Tyrion calls Sansa a wife, but in the third person, and about the marriage (and murder) of Joffrey. We do not know how they see their relationship now. There is both respect and tension between them. Tyrion reminds Sansa that his disappearance had almost killed him. Sansa alluded to the fact that it's stupid to trust Cersei.
3. Jon and Arya
In an episode practically built on meetings, this one was the sweetest and the most comforting. Jon and Arya both felt like strangers in their childhood and made strong connections. The reunion between their marriages and their speeches on the sword strongly recall the scene that ends in season 1. They also separate, making it the most emotionally charged scene of all time. ;episode.
But there is also a tension. Jon had hoped to find an ally to Arya to counter what he saw as a boring interference from Sansa. But Arya surprises her by siding with Sansa and calling her "the smartest person I know."
4. Arya and the dog
No lost love here. Arya left Sandor Clegane to die and do not regret it when they find themselves face to face. The Dog already knows that she is alive and seems happy to see her as she pleases. But Arya shows no heat. Their relationship has always been very strange and full of tension. If you remember, Hound was also on the list of Arya victims. Is he still on it, and is it important for Arya now? No clue at the moment.
5. Gendry and Arya
The fandom has been dispatching them from the beginning, and obliging, the meeting of Gendry and Arya at the Winterfell Fortress has its share of tension baduality. Their blindness to the attractiveness of each other will attract a certain laughter. But there is also a warm warmth that emerges when Gendry calls it "Mi'lady" as in the days of Kingsroad and qu'Arya made a rare and sweet smile.
6. Jon and Sam
Season 8 marks one of the most anticipated meetings in the first episode, and are not we grateful ?! The relationship between Jon and Sam is not a problem in itself, but this meeting is complicated by Sam's knowledge of Jon's true parentage. The scene almost immediately brings out the complexities.
Sam has just learned of the death of his father and brother, as well as the role of Daenerys when Bran tells him to go talk to Jon. His revelation is therefore marked with bitterness towards the Mother of the Dragons. But it also allows him to ask a very important question. Jon gave his crown to save his people. Will Daenerys do the same when she learns that Jon is the rightful king after all?
For his part, Jon is more confused than ever. All he knows about himself cancels out of a sudden and puts him in direct competition with the woman he likes.
Jaime and Bran
The most sensational meeting of this episode is also the cliffhanger. The last time Jaime Lannister was found face to face with Bran Stark, he was in the driver when he pushed him out the tower window. It was the final scene of S1 E1, just when the Bran-Jaime encounter ends S8 E1.
Now, Jaime is on the arc of redemption arguably the steepest in the history of television and the boy that he mutilated is the omniscient Raven with three eyes. The meeting will surely be interesting when it happens in the next episode. Bran Stark also hinted that he had already told Sam that he was " waiting for an old friend " and that he therefore could not go talk to Jon.
However, it was not just the reunion in the episode. We also attended other meetings that were not as important and less involved than those mentioned above. We will simply list them below:
- Theon-Yara
- Jorah-Samwell
- Cersei-Euron
- Dolor Edd-Tormund
The meetings are over, now the fallout is waiting. What will Bran say to Jaime? How will the relations of Sansa and Tyrion unfold? More importantly, how will Jon treat the news of his royal birthright and what will Daenerys' reaction be?
Next Sunday, come quickly!
