Mumbai:

The Indian Society of Psychiatry (IPS) wrote a letter to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), claiming that the posters of Kangana Ranaut and Rajkummar Rao-starrer Mental Hai Kya depicts mental illness under poor lighting.

In a letter addressed to the head of the CBFC, Prasoon Joshi, the IPS indicated that it was opposed to a "number of problems" because the film, supported by Balaji Motion Pictures of Ekta Kapoor, seems to violate many articles of the 2017 law on mental health care.

"We take serious objections to the film that is discriminating, stigmatizing, degrading and inhuman in the projection of mental disorders and people with mental disorders," reads the letter. "We urge that the title be removed with immediate effect, thus avoiding further harm to the modesty of users of mental health services," he added.

The IPS stated that all citizens of the country were governed by the 2017 Law on Mental Health Care. is a legal requirement to become aware of mental health and reduce the stigma badociated with it. He also requested that the film's documents violating the law be censored.

"The Central Board of Film Certification being a quasi-judicial body, it is increasingly compelled by law to set an example for citizens and to be the guardian of India's rich heritage and culture."

"We also demand to censor any footage that violates the rights of people with mental disorders, and we presume that this letter is a legal warning for such events, current or future, subjective and jurisdictional."

Representatives of Balaji Motion Pictures are still not available for comment.
