Kartik Aaryan on charges of misappropriating Luka Chuppi's success: "A film is always a team work, happy that we can all make a film" | Bollywood

Earlier this week, Kartik Aaryan witnessed what he describes as a "scary and powerful" dust storm, closely watched in Udaipur. But on the other hand, the actor took advantage of the waves created by a series of his box office films. After the resounding success of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety last year, his latest film, Luka Chuppi, has just spent 50 days in theaters (so far, the film has grossed more than 150 crore in India).

"I think what works for my movies is the public connection with them," says Kartik, who is filming in Udaipur for Imtiaz Ali's still untitled film. Excerpts from an interview:

You must be delighted that your film, Luka Chuppi, has spent 50 days in theaters.
It's a great feeling to have a movie, which has not been appreciated, but also delivered to the box office. On top of that, it's a special feeling to see that the film is still going on and that it has spent 50 days in the movie theaters. As an actor, this gives you confirmation that people appreciate what you are doing. That's why they return to theaters to review their work. Really happy.

Vis-à-vis the credit that you get The success of Luka Chuppi, your co-star Kriti Sanon, said that it was unfair to leave the big women aside and that credit should be shared equitably …
If that were the case, there would be no iconic twins such as Dilip saab-Madhubalaji, Amitabh sir-Rekha madam, Kajol madam-SRK sir and, recently, Alia-Varun. A film is always a team work and it belongs to all those who worked there, to all those who participated in this wonderful journey. This film also belongs to Pankajji [Tripathi] Aparshakti Khurana, Vinayji [Pathak] Kriti [Sanon] Dinoo [Dinesh Vijan; producer] Laxman Sir [Utekar; director] and myself. I have incredible memories of the movie and I'm glad we all can make a movie.

This is your fourth film to achieve such a feat. You must be used to that now?
I do not know if I'm used to it or not, but it gives you more confidence as an actor to continue what you do. A friend of the trade world told me that it was my fourth film, which spent 50 days in theaters after the Pyaar Ka Punchnaama series and Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety. Nowadays, you get to know the fate of a film from the first weekend. I am delighted.

You must have received many compliments for Luka Chuppi.
The success of Luka Chuppi has brought me a lot – a lot of public love and tons of compliments, but the best – which nobody knows – comes from [Amitabh] Bachchan Sir. This is the best compliment I have ever received. Yeh simple liye sabse badi baat hai ki Bachchan sir m sent a text [that] the film was structured and that my performance was good. I remember being so happy and on Cloud 9 that I received his message saying he liked the movie and my performance. Honestly, I want to formulate this message and I will do it (laughs).

Next month, you finish eight years in the industry, at a time when you're doing extremely well. How do you deal with all the attention and the celebrity?
I'm just in a happy state right now. I am really pbadionate about acting. So, I try to do more work but I am also aware that it should be different and of quality. It has taken me a long time to be where I am right now and I still have a long way to go. But there is always a feeling of gratitude. For me, the idea is to be attached to my audience. So it's not like I've changed my approach at work or in a personal way. I just enjoy the process of working with different filmmakers or the kind of scenario that I want to address.
