There is a very good reason why, when we talk about "big two" in comics, we refer to Marvel and DC. Until then, they lasted the longest among all players in the game and wrote a book about comic book creation and, more importantly, about comic book characters.
However, their way of doing things can be restrictive, to say the least. The lack of permanence in their stories, for example, can be frustrating for fans because it kills a little investment in a story when Dick Grayson dies for the third time. Probably why they decided that they'd better rename him Rick.
Fortunately, there are other comic book companies out there that are off the beaten track. Many of them have the influence and alignment of characters to compete with the two big ones. They may not be as iconic as Batman or Superman, but they bring something of their own.
Have you ever wondered what would happen if you took Batman's basic idea and brought it to an extreme as logical as possible?
And if what everyone claims to be problems with the idea of the Dark Knight – a white guy masked with too much time beating the poor and suffering from mental illness – were intentionally incorporated into the character for to make one's point of view? Well, for that little psychotic experience, you turn to Dark Horse's X.
Created by Mike Richardson and Chris Warner, X is a superhero in the vaguest sense of the term. All the gimmick of the character is that he gives the criminals a chance of redemption after giving them half of an X-shaped scar. They do not move up a gear in a lifetime of absolute holiness, he gives them the other scar, then kills them.
The character of X is fascinating, insane and violent, especially because we do not know anything about the man under the mask. We do not see anything of his personal life and his mask is locked to prevent him from removing it. Only a few have already managed to see X's true face.
Unfortunately, these people are not able to tell anyone what they saw, as there are not enough of them to fill a shoe box.
