F or several seasons now, the Starks of Game of Thrones evoked the fact that "winter is coming". Now that the great battle of Winterfell is on our doorstep in season 8, it's about time they started saying "death comes" instead. Whether we like it or not, several characters, if not many, will die in the next episode, and we think Theon Greyjoy will be one of the first major characters to disappear.
Throughout the series, Theon had a tumultuous arc of character so you could not even call a "bow" in the traditional sense of the word. While Jaime Lannister began as a nasty villain who ended up becoming one of the most unexpected heroes of the series, Theon went from the humble ally Stark to a flamboyant character to the subhuman character " Reek ", until reaffirming his identity as Theon Greyjoy, an Ironborn who has turned out to be high as a Stark.
Theon recently reconciled this dual identity at the very end of season 7, honoring him by saving his sister Yara in the early seasons and by returning to Winterfell to fight alongside of Jon Snow rather than withdrawing the security of the Iron Islands.
If all this sounds like the end of Theon's trip, it's about to die.
His emotional reunion with Sansa in season 8, episode 2, reminded us that Theon was redeemed and gave us a reason to be interested in him as a character. Most viewers probably hate him a bit, but we respect and love Sansa enough to reflect his feelings. Overall, this creates the perfect storm of emotional energy for Theon's death in Episode 3 to be truly devastating.
The complete plan of Jon Snow is to use Bran Stark, aka the three-eyed crow, plays the role of a bait in the fortress, drawing the king of the night to a place where they can lean. ambush and kill him. Theon volunteered as a personal guard for Bran. "I took this castle," said Theon to Bran at the war table. "Let me defend you now."
Bran is arguably the most vulnerable and exposed person at the Great Battle of Winterfell, and Theon is responsible for serving as his first line of defense. Unless the king of the night pbades this battle, he will probably ride the Viserion ice dragon into the wood of God, hoping to kill the three-eyed crow. Theon and his Ironborn companions will have no chance, but if Night King sends a White Walker with a squad of warriors instead, we may be able to witness an even more equitable confrontation.
Before all this happens, we are linked. see a tense encounter between Theon and Bran in the Godswood. Theon will probably try to apologize to Bran, just as Jaime Lannister did in episode 2, but the Three Eyed Raven does not care much.
In the trailer of Season 8, Bran delivers a voice-over dialogue line that we have not yet filled out. heard again.
"Whatever you did brought you where you are," he says, "where you belong: at home."
We had already speculated on the fact that when Bran speaks of an "old friend" that he waits in episode 1, it is actually Theon and not of Jaime Lannister.
Bran. and Theon were almost bred. Yet, when Theon betrayed the Starks in season 2 and took Winterfell, decapitating Ser Rodrik Cbadel and simulating the deaths of Bran and Rickon, he became one of the most despicable characters in the series. He paid the price for Ramsay Snow's torture and mutilations and continues to repent for his past crimes.
In a rudimentary way, because he can not father children, there is little hope that he gets married in a sort of political alliance. And while episode 2 featured a special connection between Theon and Sansa, it probably had more to do with the fact that they were looking for solace in the peace and quiet before the storm. Theon had already saved Sansa's life, marking a turning point in her story. But does he really have a future in Westeros? Probably not.
Theon sacrificing himself in a great moment to help the good ones win the victory could bring a satisfying sum of closure to his narrative on Game of Thrones . The only question that arises is whether he can save Bran or if his death will be in vain.
