It is rare for a Bollywood star to regain lost ground. But Katrina Kaif managed to do it. She was the diva of Hindi cinema in power when she retired three years ago (for a tiny bit) to pursue her personal dream with Ranbir Kapoor. This chapter is over. maybe not as she wanted. However, to borrow a cliché, she rose like a phoenix from her ashes.
What is commendable is that Kat wasted no time in doing so. She has just completed her game with compelling performances in such large-scale companies as Tiger Zinda Hai ( TZH 2017), Thugs Of Hindostan ( TOH 2018) and Zero (2018). TZH reported 339 million rupees at the national box office, but The HO and Zero were an epic disaster. Aside from the fate of the movies, Katrina was the only beneficiary of all this.
Her journey as an actress has been remarkably good. As she prepares for another magnum opus, Bharat the leggy girl talks about the change in her art and her personal transformation. On the way to Katrina, the girl to the maximum celebrity of B-Town.
Salman Khan and you are an evergreen jodi. TZH pushed the bar.
I think the public expects a lot of Salman and me as jodi on screen. We have received so much love and support from fans that we have so much more responsibility for delivering a good movie. Nowadays, tolerance for all that is not perfect is so weak. The cinema has evolved; entertainment is available on as many platforms and there is an influx of digital shows. So, people are no longer in the mood to tolerate anything but the best. They want quality, they want the soul. No fancy, flowery words and image building exercises will help make the cut. If your product is not quality, make sure it will be rejected. Your story and your movie must have a soul. And Bharat has this, he has substance.
Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan in Bharat
How do you think this will compare to the best?
] I do not mean that all of our films should be compared to those of Steven Spielberg. There are all types of movies. But, your job must be of a super honest quality. As an actor, you need to make sure that when you stand on this set, whatever your power, you give it thoroughly. If you do not, the public will not spare you.
In your opinion, Salman and you have evolved as a couple of screen?
Yes.
Have you entered the film's release after Priyanka Chopra Jonas?
Yes, I was not supposed to do Bharat initially, it was Priyanka. Just two months before the shoot, Ali Abbas Zafar (director) called me and told me that there was a heroin change. At first I thought he was pulling my leg because I really did not know everything that had happened on the PC. In any case, he asked me to read the script. What I like about Ali, is that he is a simple man. It was clear that I should only make the film if I liked my part. He did not want me to base my decision on the basis of our friendship. It took me three hours and 15 minutes to read the script and I was blown away. I was sitting with my script coach. And I told him, "Is not that so good?" I called Ali and told him that I loved him.
Tell us more about your character, Kumud.
He is a strong character, well written. I saw this as an opportunity to play a role that really spoke to me, to represent a woman desi Hindustani. What I have the closest to this kind of things is my role in Prakash Jha Raajneeti (2010). But even that was not so desi like that. So it was a challenge for me.
You play a woman of the 70s?
Playing this character did not mean only working on one aspect. It meant a lot more. From the first day to the last day of the shoot, I immersed myself in it. I slowed down to fit in the mold of a 70s woman. You know that the world today is so fast. Everything is at the touch of a button. Whether it's social media or something else, we are so connected. However, Kumud is not of this world. I did not even want my usual toned gym body. Instead, I stuck to yoga and stretching exercises to stay in shape. She works in a hot and sweaty job market in Delhi. So I had to display the spirit of a single woman who was fighting in the world of men at the time. During the 20 days of the calendar, I behaved like Kumud. I did not run to the gym after packing to pump the iron, or even to get out of the character. Even after packing, I lived in this bubble; to stick to the way Kumud speaks, keeping his attitude in mind.
Lately, you seem to be pushing yourself too hard. That's right?
I do not think I push myself unhealthily. Sometimes you tell yourself – okay, that's not what I expected. That's where I am. We do not stay the same person we were. Each of us is growing up. Today, I have to be honest with the person I am. I do not know what the future holds. However, I think the world has been a more welcoming place for me in the last two years. Previously, I had a lot more fear. Now, here we go.
But you're still very work-oriented …
We're all trying to be the best at what we do. I feel that I must be absolutely faithful to my work. I have been fortunate to have people who have entered my professional life and I am happy with their advice. I've learned that the more you connect to your work, the more fun you get. I found this place of growth and connection. So, it's not like I've been naughty to myself. I have just changed.
You've become an expert at keeping the equations with people – be it Alia Bhatt, Deepika Padukone or Ranbir Kapoor. You have been seen exchanging jokes with them at a recent awards ceremony.
I will tell you something important. A certain thing is already playing in a certain way. My reaction to that makes no difference. I can sit here and feel anger and bitterness. I can make myself unhappy. Or I can take that into account, how miserable I am makes no difference for anyone else. So, instead, I can lighten my burden and say: let me be happy and at peace. And what is done for me will happen to me.
I'm not trying to be Ms Goody Two Shoes. I am not an alien being. I suffer my share of pain and anguish. But I do not see the point of keeping a grudge. Whoever (no name is taken), I do not see the point of keeping something unpleasant from the past. I would rather let the past be pbaded. I do not think anyone is there to hurt me. People are trying to do the best for you. But sometimes, trying to do the best for you, you're hurt. Pity. However, I would rather have a friend than an enemy.
Deep …
Believe me, I would sincerely prefer to have a friend rather than an enemy. I like to laugh, I like talking to people. I like hanging out with people. Under the circumstances, I do not see the point of staying out of the way. I think it's important to make friends.
You signed another jackpot, Sooryavanshi ?
I'm happy to be back on a set with Akshay Kumar and Rohit (Shetty). At so many levels, Akshay is so special. Our badociation is a long badociation and it does not disappear with time. When I stood next to him on the terrace to take the picture we had made to announce the film, I was really happy. It was a good feeling.
Rohit sir is a person I have always admired. The cinematic world that it unites – the mega franchises ( of Golmaal, Singham, Simmba ) for which it is known – is incredible. People go to the theater to watch a Rohit Shetty movie. The cinema that makes it bigger than life is admirable. He is an autodidact and his achievements are commendable.
It is said that Salman Inshallah and Sooryavanshi will come up against the next Eid.
Salman loves Akshay, he loves Rohit. He will always support me at work. So, I do not think he will let his film clash with Sooryavanshi .
