The actress Alia Bhatt is one of the most popular young stars in Bollywood. Her older sister, Shaheen Bhatt, is in the news from time to time. In a recent interview with film critic Rajeev Masand, she spoke about her struggle with depression throughout her teenage years, her suicidal thoughts, her shameful behavior and the way a photographer asked her to retire during a photo shoot with sisters Alia and Pooja Bhatt.
Speaking of the incident, Shaheen said, "It makes me uncomfortable right now, the fact that you are talking about it makes it uncomfortable. I think women generally suffer from a lot of body image and a lot of things that are told to us by the media, by ourselves, it's a problem in general. Self-confidence … is definitely … shame is certainly a cause of depression, for any reason. In women, body image also tends to be one of the causes of shame. Many other causes too. Shame is central. I would like people to understand that shame is at the heart of any feeling of depression and sadness and that it prevents you from being vulnerable. My esteem for me was definitely affected because I was at an age when the seeds of this seed were sown in me. I was just trying to understand who I was and, of course, when something like this happens to you at such an uncertain and uncertain moment in your life, it kind of kindles that and freezes it in the concrete. She had written how "until now, looking at these images was emotionally handicapping her."
