The final scene of Avengers: Endgame has given way to many questions. Where did Captain America go when he brought back the Infinity Stones in the past? How long has he lived in the past with Peggy Carter? How did he do it for decades without anyone noticing it?
The Russo brothers explain their intentions in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly . They confirmed that Captain America could not live in the past the Marvel film universe for decades because it would have created a "ramified reality" – a theory of journey back in time established earlier in Endgame it is said that it is impossible to change the past and that you end up creating an alternate reality where different events unfold.
Okay, so, if Steve Rogers did not go back to the past – or he was traveling in the past, but then created another dimension – how did he go back to the present MCU to hand over the shield of Captain America to Sam Wilson? This is what Joe Russo answered to these questions:
Interesting question, no? There may be a story there. This film has many layers and we spent three years thinking about it. So it's fun to talk about it and fill in the gaps to allow people to understand what we think.
The Russo also hinted that Bucky's distant nature in this scene implied that he knew what Steve was doing before doing it, and that he had perhaps already met Steve Rogers, who was traveling back in time. This could be something that has been explored in the upcoming TV series about Falcon and Winter Soldier that arrives at Disney +.
I'm not sure that really answers the questions we have as long as it reduces them a bit. We now know a little about what Marvel had planned with this end. But there are still many things we do not know – and that will not know before the Falcon and Winter Soldier concert at the earliest.
