Seven years after Ayushmann Khurrana made his debut in Hindi cinema with his adventures as an unsuspecting sperm donor in Vicky Donor, he is busier than ever, with three films in the movies this year . Life and shrewd movie choices have made the 34-year-old one of Bollywood's most coveted players.
We meet at Yash Raj Studios, an important place in the overcrowded Mumbai landscape. The talent pool of the studio, selected by the Honcho Aditya Chopra, groups mainly those who are about to become stars. That Khurrana is on his list, says a lot about the Chandigarh actor.
He comes in as he came out of the pages of a fashion magazine.
Off screen, Khurrana, who is famous, is careful to dress the room. In movies, it's a different story. It normally wears Heartland fashion rather than haute couture. Playing the usual little town Joe and Dilli ka launda has become a must for Khurrana to make fun of himself in the promotional video of his upcoming film Dream Girl: "Dilliwaale soch rahein hain ki Purana Qilla is a nakam ab Khurrana Qilla rakh dein ! "
It would be safe to say that Khurrana is an extraordinary practitioner who plays stories of the people.
The ex-veejay caught the attention of everyone, Vicky Donor, and then followed with forgotten turkeys such as Nautanki Saala, Bewakoofiyan and Hawaizaada, but bounces with Dum Laga Ke Haisha. He then scored big with Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and Bareilly Ki Barfi, then came to the corner with Andhadhun and Badhaai Ho. After his release in China, comedic thriller Andhadhun just added crore to 300 rupees.
Explaining his method of choosing films, Khurrana states, "There is no point of reference for the script in India or elsewhere. . I am always attracted by different topics, which break taboos and have a subliminal message. They must be informed in an entertaining way. I am happy that we live in India, where taboo subjects and social stigma are not lacking. We are full of it.
Unlike the more muscular, masculine and alpha-masculine image of Vicky Kaushal in the space of ordinary men, Khurrana is molded into a softer mold. It looks more like an image of Farooque Sheikh meeting Amol Palekar than a film by Dharmendra Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
RS Prasanna, who realized Khurrana in Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, says, "I would always tell them (Khurrana and Bhumi Pednekar)" You are Farooque Sheikh and Dipti Naval! "
The cinematographic image of Khurrana is reinforced by his staff: a singer and musician, he is one of the few who likes to tell linguistic anecdotes. "The vocabulary changes every five years or so. For example, there is the familiar term bhasad (confusion), which is very popular in Delhi. The use of such words is one of the small things that makes a character convincing, including the character of a small town.
In Anubhav Sinha's Article 15, again a small town story, Khurrana plays for the first time in the shoes of a policeman. "Ayushmann is someone who is more interested in the story than the character he is interpreting." It makes working with him a refreshing experience. You will not find him obsessed with his look or the way he is presented, "says Sinha.
His other upcoming films also have fascinating premises: in Dreamgirl, he plays a character dressed in sari and in Bala, a bald man.
This is probably the strategy of Khurrana who wants to surpbad himself to the next level by remaining in front of the growing tribe of actors "not slip under the skin of characters with ease even if it makes them prisoners of" 39, a sort of nebulous image.
"The only aspiration is to create fresh content and, if that creates an image to be different and in the middle of the road, it's okay," says Khurrana.
Prasanna likens him to perfectionist Aamir Khan in his creative career strategy, and the filmmaker adds that Khurrana's image and attitude play an advantage. "I'm thirsty for it." Actors like Ayushmann because of his intelligence and from what he can draw from his image, "enthuses Prasanna. Amit Sharma (Badhaai Ho), Shoojit Sarkar (donor Vicky) and Sharat Katariya (Dum Laga Ke Haisha) are among them.
Khurrana says of his next steps: Do not change yourself in each movie because you will then be exhausted as an actor. As actors, we want to change with each role but people are not interested in a different one each time. They just want to see a different story, so the idea is to give them another story. "
