In the fourth episode of the last season of Game of Thrones "The Last of the Starks", we witnessed something that had never happened before in the series: a being human killed one of Daenerys Targaryen's dragons. .
Euron Greyjoy, the vulgar salt sailor, surprised Dany's fleet and shot down his dragon Rhaegal with giant arrows shot by giant crossbows on his ships. In doing so, Euron has ensured that Cersei Lannister is no longer confronted with as much firepower as before, while striking the nerves of heart of Game of Thrones fans.
The dragons, because of their tough skin and their ability to fly, are quite difficult to kill, and until now, only the king of nights – who possessed a supernatural ice-casting power, like we saw it during the season seven – could bring one down. Previously, there were several cases in Game of Thrones where we saw how helpless humans are against fire-breathing beasts (see: Meereen Slavers, Sons of the Harpy). But the show has already traced the fate of these flying wonders, and this story is the reason why Euron and his navy were finally able to do it.
Cersei studies how to kill dragons since the seventh season
To kill a dragon on Game of Thrones one must be able to pierce his scaly skin.
Although we have seen dragons suffer damage in the past, they have finally been able to ignore them if the weapons used against them were not able to actually penetrate their skin. Example: In the ninth episode of season five, the Sons of the Harpy could hit Drogon with spears, but none could seriously hurt him:
The only time a dragon dies Game of Thrones was the sixth episode of Season 7, "Beyond the Wall," when King Night launched an ice spear at Viserion. The spear hit the animal in the trunk and pierced his skin, finally killing him:
But the king of the night was not the only one who wanted to destroy Dany's dragons.
Earlier in season seven, Qyburn had discussed the dragon's physiology with Cersei while they were walking in a room full of dragon skulls, explaining that Drogon had been wounded with the help of lances to Meereen. This knowledge led Qyburn to ask the blacksmiths to build scorpions, giant crossbows capable of firing huge arrows with the incredible force needed to punch dragon's skin. He introduced one of Cersei's machines in a scene referenced in the opening credits of season eight, which shows a scorpion throwing an arrow into a dragon's skull.
A few episodes later, Bronn used one of the scorpions during the booty train attack in "The Loot of War" when Dany ambushed the Army of Lannister while they were coming back from Highgarden:
But when the scorpion's arrow hit Drogon, Dany came out of his skin like a thorn.
The difference between the two scenes seems to be that Bronn's arrow did not touch any vital organ or Drogon's sensitive point, whereas the king of the night's ice spear would likely have touched Viserion's heart or lungs. . This is what Qyburn demonstrated for Cersei, when he pulled the dragon's skull through his eye socket to where his brain would have been.
All this was taken into account by the Euron navy that killed Rhaegal: he and his navy were able to hit Rhaegal several times with penetrating arrows, and at least two of them landed in places sensitive – the chest and throat of the dragon.
What is slightly unbelievable about this turn of events, is that, however powerful the army of death and the king of the night, they have managed to kill a dragon only after attacking Dany and the Starks twice. One of these attacks also involved Rhaegal and the undead Viserion who was standing in the air (who had hurt Rhaegal).
In addition, it appears that many consecutive successes on a dragon, especially when someone as experienced as Bronn was barely able to achieve a minor hit on Drogon during Season 7, would require a well trained team. in the dragon slaughter and much more accurate and handy with a scorpion that we have never seen. It's not totally incredible, but it means that Euron and the Golden Company may be much more powerful than we thought. Now that they have shown that they can bring down a dragon, Cersei seems to be a much more formidable final enemy.
