'Kamali' won the Best Documentary Award at the Atlanta Film Festival, qualifying for the Oscars 2020 Selection List.
A year after making the headlines, Tamali Nadu, Kamali Moorthy , 9, is about to live a new stage in his life. A short film about the little girl, her mother and her grandmother, is now qualified for the list of Oscar 2020 finalists.
Titled Kamali, the story follows the struggle of Kamali's mother, Suganthi, to free his children from the chains of tradition and patriarchy. "When Suganthi (Kamali's mother) sees her children, she reflects on her childhood and the fact that she could not do what she wanted to do because of society. Today, she wants Kamali to taste the freedom she did not have, "TNM Aine Edwards, Kamali's mentor, told TNM.
The 24-minute short film by New Zealand director Sasha Rainbow won the Best Documentary Award at the Atlanta Film Festival in April. Kamali is thus qualified to be on the Oscars list of the best candidates for 2020.
"The team came to shoot the film for six weeks. After publishing it, they even sent it to the Mumbai International Short Film Festival in December 2018, where he won the Best Director Award, "Aine told TNM.
Skate Scene by Storm
Kamali has the distinction of being the only girl to skateboard in Mahabalipuram, a leeward fishing town, in Tamil Nadu. She has also toured the country with professional skateboarding teams to promote the sport. Living near the beach, she also surfs and dreams of becoming a surfer and professional skater.
