Muscat: The Omani writer Jokha Al Harthi won the prestigious Man Booker International Award for her novel Celestial Bodies, announced the award committee.
According to a statement by Man Booker, "Celestial Bodies, written by Jokha Alharthi, translated into Arabic by Marilyn Booth and published by Sandstone Press, is announced today as the winner of the Man Booker International Prize 2019."
The judges were impressed not only by the style of the book's writing, but his representations of Oman and his moral ideas. The prize comes with a cash prize of 25,000 OMR.
Jokha Al Harthi, who studied literature at the University of Edinburgh, said that literature played an important role in his life.
Jokha Al Harthi is the first Arabic-language writer to win the Man Booker International Prize with Celestial Bodies.
