Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Asif Kapadia, Werner Herzog and Sonam Kapoor – There are not many spaces in which a journalist can interview these four artists in one day! I started with a screening of Asif Kapadia's new film, Diego Maradona, at 8:30 am A 8:30 check means that you have to be in place by 8:10 am at the latest because the lines are very long. As I walked towards the Palais des Festivals around 7:55, I saw a man standing in the cold with a sign asking for a ticket for a movie. The pbadion for the films presented here is breathtaking.

Diego Maradona is a captivating and heart-wrenching film about the legend of football which, for a brief moment, became God. In the field, Maradona was a beauty. I have no interest in football and I know very little about Maradona's career, but even for a man like me, the sequence of his prowess with a ball was amazing. Like his two previous documentaries, Senna and Amy, Asif has directed a documentary that does not rely on the usual talking heads, but on archival footage. The film shows that Maradona became the best football player in the world, followed by his fall caused by cocaine and scandal. Unlike previous Asif topics, Maradona is very active. But it is devastating to see him overweight and frayed by time. Diego Maradona celebrates the peaks but does not fear the lowest. Asif said that Maradona had given his blessing to the project but had not seen the film yet.

Unlike Maradona, filmmaker Werner Herzog is so motivated and disciplined that at 76, he has completed three films in the last 12 months. Herzog has self-financed his latest film Family Romance, LLC. It is not a problem to shoot in Japan or to direct Japanese actors via an interpreter. I asked him if he was afraid of missing topics as he is prolific. He said not at all because there are dozens of subjects waiting and he will decide what to do, according to which one will come to him the most 'keenly'.

Meanwhile, Sonam Kapoor Ahuja was preparing to walk on the red carpet tomorrow. I've read that with hits like Sanju, Padman and Veere from Wedding, Sonam was the most profitable female actress of 2018. In 2019, she figured in the Variety Women's Impact Report for her work in the cinema. Sonam said his privileged position offered him a safety net that made it easier for him to take on risky roles. Sonam has been coming to Cannes for 9 years. When I asked if the fact that more actors are now walking on the red carpet makes it more competitive and more difficult to differentiate, she replied that it was never a question of standing out . She said you should feel good about your clothes and that will make you shine.

I also chatted with Aishwarya right after she finished walking on the red carpet. This trip was a whirlwind with too much time in 48 hours but she looked radiant. She confirmed that she would shoot Mani Ratnam's next film, which she called "back to school". Filming should probably begin by the end of the year. Since the beginning of his first film, Iruvar, Aishwarya has always made some of his best achievements with Mani (remember Guru), so it's something to be hoped for. When I asked how Aaradhya was handling the constant attention of the media, she said that Abhishek and she had always said to stay true and that it was also what I was saying. They do with their daughter!

Tomorrow is my last day in Cannes. I'll admit that festival fatigue is starting to make itself felt and that I'm starting to look like one of Jim Jarmusch's The Dead Do not Die zombies.
