Author and global investor, Ruchir Sharma's interest in Indian politics has only grown over the years, even though he lives in the United States. His recent book, Democracy on the Road: A Journey of 25 Years in India, is a compilation of his two decades of travel to major Indian states while pursuing election campaigns.
In a conversation with Newslaundry editor Madhu Trehan, Ruchir explains his keen interest in politics, economics and writing. As a child, his interest in politics was sparked by the political situation in his hometown of Bijnor, Uttar Pradesh. He also discusses the moment when he introduced to Sonia and Rahul Gandhi economic reforms beneficial to India – an interaction that led him to pledge never to advise politicians. I have never seen India as polarized at the level of castes, religions or leaders: you love Modi or hate Modi. I have never seen India so polarized in terms of all my travels.
