What is the use of VID?

You can use the VID instead of the Aadhaar card number for authentication and use of e-KYC services. VID can be used as the Aadhaar card number is used. However, we can not derive the Aadhaar number from VID. The VID can not be stored by any agency as it is temporary and can be changed by the Aadhaar number holder. The VID is not stored by any agency in databases or logs. The VID issued by UIDAI remains valid until a new VID is generated by the holder of the Aadhaar number.

To generate a virtual identifier for an Aadhaar card or to obtain a VID, you must go to the following address: https://uidai.gov.in/. Go to the My Aadhaar section and you will find options like "Get Aadhaar", "Update Your Aadhaar", "Aadhaar Services" and "About Your Aadhaar". You must go to 'Aadhaar Services' and click on 'Virtual ID Generator (VID)'. A separate page will open where you will have the option to "Generate or Retrieve a VID" through the Aadhaar number. You must enter the 12-digit Aadhaar UAD number. You must enter the security code provided by UIDAI. Then click on 'Send or Generate OTP'. You receive an OTP message on your mobile phone number registered with UIDAI. Once you have received the OTP, return to the page and you will find the 'Enter OTP' option. Fill in the OTP and click Generate VID. After that, a confirmation message will be displayed and you will receive VID on your registered mobile phone number.

Currently, the minimum validity period of VID is one day. After that, if an Aadhaar cardholder chooses to regenerate the VID, a new VID will be sent to your mobile number and the previous VID will be disabled.
