The actress and singer Ruma Guha Thakurta died Monday morning in her residence in Kolkata. She was 84 years old.
Ruma suffered from ailments related to old age.
After his debut on the big screen with Hindi film Jwar Bhata in 1944, Ruma Guha Thakurta, a niece of filmmaker Satyajit Ray, starred in Bengali films such as Ganga, Abhijaan, Palatak, Antony Firingee, 80, Balika Badhu , Dadar Kirti, 36 Chowringhee Lane, Amrita Sandhane Kumbher, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa and Wheelchair. She was last seen in the English film The Namesake.
Aside from the acting game, Ruma was also a very popular playback vocalist.
Ruma Guha Thakurta also founded the Calcutta Youth Choir, a singing and dancing troupe, in 1958. for her performances of popular songs and mbad songs.
Ruma Guha is the first wife of singer and actor Kishore Kumar. The two were married in 1951. They have a son, Amit Kumar. The couple divorced in 1960, after which Ruma tied a knot with Arup Guha Thakurta. Ruma and Arup have two children, Sromona Guha Thakurta and Ayan Guha Thakurta.
Ayan said that his mother had returned to Kolkata barely a month ago, after a three-month stay at Amit Kumar in Mumbai.
"Dada (Amit) is coming here tonight. He will make all the decisions (concerning his last sacraments), "said Ayan.
The Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her condolences on Twitter. She wrote:" saddened by the pbading of Ruma Guha Thakurta will always be remembered for his contribution to film and music, and my condolences to his family and admirers. "
