The legendary chef reigned for over five decades in the culinary landscape of India. His glorious career, from journalist to renowned chef and restaurateur, is a dream for many. From serving members of the royal family to prominent political figures such as Princess Diana and Prince Charles, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Bill Clinton, his culinary journey boasts many memories.
Jaspal Inder Singh Kalra, better known as Jiggs Kalra, was one of the first Indian connoisseurs to go through various stages and earn honors during his lifetime. One of his most notable achievements has been the introduction of Indian cuisine to the international audience and the creation of a niche for the same on the world gastronomic map.
The Food Columnist was the first Asian to be inducted into the prestigious Hall of Fame International Hall of Fame. His culinary career paved the way for the recognition of Indian cuisine on the international platform. He was the first to conceptualize and animate a television series focused on food.
His efforts to recreate the culinary heritage shaped Indian cuisine by giving it a touch of modernity. It has helped revive the age-old delights of the treasure of the royal kitchens of India. His genius and vision have opened several paths to Indian cuisine, making him the first Indian state contingent to represent the country on the global platform. In addition, he is the author of more than 11 books on Indian cuisine, including "Prashad," known as "bible" for budding chefs.
As a mentor and culinary director of Mbadive Restaurants, he then introduced a chain of award-winning concept restaurants such as Jiggs Kalra's Masala Library, Made in Punjab, Farzi Café and Pa Pa Ya. His son Zorawar Kalra continued his constant efforts to bring Indian cuisine to new heights.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Zorawar and Dildeep Kalra. Following in his footsteps, the duo takes responsibility for his dream and his legacy.
