Friends Fans have often wondered why Ross had seen so little of his son Ben throughout the series, but maybe this nonsense could shed some light on this creative decision. In "The One Where Old Yeller Dies", Ross is frustrated by the number of "firsts" that have escaped him in the boy's life and he wants to attend at least one of these major milestones. To this end, Ross tries to persuade the toddler to say his very first word during his visit. While Ross takes Ben to Rachel's house to see him at the café, he tries to convince the baby to say "Dada", but to no avail.
The little actor who represents little Ben, however, did not understand what he wanted for a few shots, as shown in this behind-the-scenes sequence of the episode. The clip reveals that there was at least two times where, while David Schwimmer was expressing his paternal lament about the boy needing to say his word, the girl describing Ben took these lines to the letter and said – you guessed it – "Dada". From the mouths of babies indeed. For the credit of Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston, they reacted to the adorable slip by tapping comfortable squiggles for the tyke that steals the scene.
