Famous actor, filmmaker and playwright Girish Karnad pbaded away on Monday. He was 81 years old.
Karnad succumbed to a long illness at home at Vittal Mallya Road in Bengaluru. An employee of the Cubbon Park Police Station, under whose jurisdiction the legendary writer lived, confirmed the sad demise of News18.
Karnad has mainly worked in South Indian cinema and in Bollywood. It has gained importance with its pbadage into the adult age of modern Indian dramaturgy in Kannada. He received the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary distinction awarded in India.
He also received Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan, and won several honors for his film Kannada.
Karnad, who often used history and mythology to tackle contemporary issues, had his work translated into various Indian languages and directed by directors such as Ebrahim Alkazi, BB V Karanth and Alyque Padamsee, among others.
Karnad had his debut as a screenwriter and screenwriter with a Kannada film of 1970 Samskara . The film, based on a novel by Ananthamurthy UR and directed by Pattabhirama Reddy, won the President's first Golden Lotus Award for Kannada Cinema.
Some of his popular films on Kannada include Magane's Tabbaliyu Neenade, Kaladalli Ondanondu, Cheluvi Kaadu and Kanooru Heggaditi .
His films in Hindi include Nishaant, Manthan, Swami and Pukar . He had appeared in several Nagesh Kukunoor films, beginning with Iqbal in which Karnad played the role of a ruthless cricket coach. Then come Dor 8 x 10 Tasveer and Aashayein . In 2012, he played the role of RAW chairman, Shenoy, in Salman Khan-starrer Ek Tha Tiger . He resumed his role of Shenoy in Tiger Zinda Hai .
Heads of Government Narendra Modi and Karnataka CM H D Kumaraswamy tweeted their condolences for the iconic personality of film and theater.
Modi wrote: "Girish Karnad will be remembered for his versatile playing, whatever the medium, he also spoke pbadionately about the causes that were dear to him, and his works will continue to be popular in the years to come. Sad of his death, rest in peace. "

The President of the State BJP, S Yedyurappa, also expressed his condolences on Twitter.

Karnad is survived by his wife Saraswathi and his son Raghu Karnad.
