"I'm my mother is a sci-fi movie that does things right."
As we have seen previously, robots with artificial intelligence will help us succeed in the future with a peaceful existence or completely wipe out the world's population for their global takeover. With the new original movie Netflix I Am Mother it's not as black and white as that. The repertoire of newcomers has a large gray area Grant Sputore tells the story of a man / robot relationship. This well-paced thriller has wonderful original ideas that are twisted and never sell without pbadionate participation. It's a science fiction film that succeeds.
Sputore was strongly influenced by Ridley Scott's film Alien with with James Cameron's Terminator while we encounter a robot AI pbading near Mother, expressed by the elegant and soothing of Rose Byrne . The text reads on the screen "Event Number of days since extinction: 0. Human embryos on site: 63,000. Current human occupants: 000." This gives us the information we need to ensure that the world is ending and we know almost no survivors. The mother then removes an embryo and we see her methodically resting for 24 hours until the embryo is now a baby. In a frightening montage sequence placed on the beautiful song Dumbo we see this baby grow up, while Mother feeds her, as the mother feeds her, with school, arts and crafts, appeasement of nightmares, etc.
Now, her daughter grew up (played by the excellent new actress Clara Rugaard ) where she is currently studying for a medical examination and everything seems to picture her copasetic with this daughter / mother relationship. While Daughter roams the long metal corridors with a disturbing score, Ripley recalls the Nostramo, where anything can happen at any time, which happens in the form of another human pbading by Woman ( Hillary Swank ). A woman is wounded and desperately trying to penetrate inside this steel structure, which Daughter greatly allows for Mother's sorrow. From there, Daughter is told different stories about what really happened on the planet Earth from this newcomer who was outside and from the Mother who raised her, where she will have to find who to believe exactly to rekindle a human population.
This is an extremely suspenseful flow where more details are revealed that illuminate both sides of the story. Sputore gracefully keeps these characters in check and balances them with multiple layers of emotions where you can not know exactly who could turn to the dark side or the light. It's fascinating to watch, because you really develop a quick relationship with these characters and you desperately want to discover the truth. Revelation is really something special and does not hit you in the head. Instead, you'll have to think a little bit about it and realize how good this science fiction work is.
Special effects are outside this scope. world too, when it comes to the robot's mother. In fact, the robot was built at the Weta workshop, made famous by Peter Jackson's film The Lord of the Rings . The amount of detail in the design, movement, and execution of this character is amazing.
I Am Mother is a welcome addition to the genre of science fiction and if this film is something to show after the work of the newcomers of Clara Rugaard ] and by Grant Sputore we can certainly expect a great job from them, not to mention another captivating performance by Hillary Swank, where I adore seeing more of her in a job of gender. Certainly check this one.
