Girish Karnad, winner of the Jnanpith Award, multilingual scholar, playwright, scriptwriter, actor, director and iconic personality of the Indian cultural landscape, died Monday in Bengaluru. He was 81 years old.
"Karnad died at home around 8:30 in the morning because of age-related symptoms," an official at the Prime Minister's office in Karnataka told IANS. The veteran artist is survived by his widow Saraswathy Ganapathy, his son Raghu Amay and his daughter Shalmali Radha.
According to Karnad's last wishes, his mortal remains were cremated in a local electric crematorium "quietly" in the presence of family members, close relatives and some friends.

According to a source close to the family, Karnad died of organ failure in his home on Lavelle Road, the upscale community near Cubbon Park.
The state government said Monday a day off to mark Karnad's respect. and a three day mourning will be observed throughout the state until June 12th.
"The planned enlargement of the Cabinet of State on Wednesday was also postponed until June 14 due to the mourning period," said the head office official of the Chief Minister.

President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister of Karnataka, HD Kumaraswamy, former Prime Minister and Supreme supremo Janata Dal-Laic, HD Deve Gowda and the Minister of the Union charged chemicals and fertilizers, DV Sadananda Gowda, mourned the disappearance of Karnad and offered their condolences to family members and loved ones.

Karnad is also a renowned scholar who has made his voice heard on socio-political issues. During a career of six decades, Karnad has played in Kannada, Hindi and Marathi films, both in mainstream and parallel cinema. He has also appeared in television series, including the famous "Malgudi Days", inspired by the works of the famous Indian writer RK Narayan.

Karnad, who rode the world of theater and film in various languages, was born on May 19, 1938 in Matheran. He graduated from Karnataka University and was Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University, where he studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
