The central character of Ashwin Saravanan's horror thriller is a video game designer. It follows that his difficulties resemble a series of obstacles.
Some are in his head. Sapna (Taapsee Pannu) is a survivor of a crime that left her anxious. In a sprawling house with only a housekeeper, Kalamma (Vinothini), and a security guard, Sapna tries to get back to work while tirelessly trying to improve his score at the clbadic video game Pac-Man .
Outside, a serial killer who loves to behead young women is on the lookout. The killer records his actions on a camera even as he commits them, adding an extra visual layer to a movie that skillfully uses a camera from the point of view and a tight framing to create traps in Sapna. The idea of a home invasion is also intensifying in an interesting way, with Sapna battling demons inside and out.
Leanness is the name of the game here: the characters are a handful; jumping cases are judiciously deployed; the dialogue is minimal to the point of being functional ( Game Over was originally made in Tamil and was dubbed in Hindi). A detour into sentimentality is so shocking that it is a relief when it ends.
Saravanan and co-author Kaavya Ramkumar deliver a very tense and very watchable thriller that, despite its disappointed ambitions, has a keen sense of the path. Violence against women prints on bodies and souls. The emphasis on self-sufficiency and resilience in battered women, however, is not always convincing, and the link between Sapna's anxieties and a broader culture of aggression needs to be deepened.
Taapsee Pannu performs a difficult performance like Sapna, limited by his fears in a psychological and literal way, and Vinothini is as effective as the nurse's aide of Sapna. While these women forge a kind of brotherhood and make their way beyond the curves, they suggest that the horror film can work very well without men. At least on this point, Game Over is a modest triumph.
