Director Meghan Gulzar revealed that she had always wanted Deepika Padukone to play the lead role in her next film, Chhapaak. Deepika plays a survivor of an acid attack in the film, based on the life of Laxmi Aggarwal.
Speaking to Pinkvilla, Meghna stated that the idea of the film had come to her after she finished Talwar in 2015 but decided to do Raazi. "I had the idea (for Chhapaak) after Talvar, then I met Laxmi in 2016 and spent a year talking with her with my writer Atika Chohan. We worked together on the screenplay but when that happened, Raazi came close. That's why Raazi came first. Atika and I then developed the script and discussed with Laxmi. We have put things in place since 2016. Once Raazi pbaded, I thought that was the right time to take the script and make it alive, "she said.

She also explained how she had always considered Deepika as the ideal choice for the film. "I would be lying if I said that Deepika is not always part of the movie … I mean, it was as if that wish not said and not expressed Atika and I had. We've seen pictures of it. Laxmi's appearance before the attack and I found a disturbing similarity with Deepika, but you know, at that time we were as if we let our imagination go wild, I do not think Deepika would give this thought a moment because it's too radical, but it's a thought we are silently feeding in our hearts. she said yes to the project, leaving Meghna surprised. "I really think you need a lot of rooting so that you can get out of the skin and get into the skin of someone else." She has completely abandoned everything we know as Deepika Padukone, the face, the brand, the actor. She did everything to play this role. It takes a lot of courage, "she said.
The team recently finished filming the film. Meghna shared a series of photos of her main characters Vikrant Mbadey and Deepika from the sets. In the pictures, Deepika could be seen in prosthetics and dressed in a salwar suit and with mehendi in her hands. Vikrant and Meghna and Deepika are smiling and posing for the camera.
"And we packed #chhapaak, Malti … Amol … I'll take you with me. Thank you for your faith and for being involved in our film! Meghna subtitled the images. Chhapaak is scheduled to be released in theaters on January 10, 2020.
