In addition to being a part-time lecturer at Columbia, Lederer is also a prosecutor at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office. Gillian Lester, the school's dean, sent an e-mail explaining Lederer's choice not to renew his term by stating that the show "rekindled a painful and vital national conversation about race, identity and criminal justice ".

The Black Law Students Association also led a movement on campus, forcing the former Central Park Five attorney to resign. In a letter made available online they thank the DuVernay docuseries for giving them the strength to fight for change and to challenge Lederer.
