Anupam Kher plays the role of a judge turned executioner in the awkward title entitled One Day: Justice Rendered . Ashok Nanda's film in the film "Ranchi-set" features Kher as Tyagi, a judge forced by poor evidence and a hostile witness to exonerate people he knows to be guilty. After her retirement, Tyagi swaps her dress for an invisible cape of superheroes. Seeing that late justice is better justice than denied, Tyagi embarks on a series of kidnappings in an attempt to force criminals to confess their confessions. He traps a pair of doctors, a hotelier and a mechanic and is about to fill his basement with additional victims until the law overtakes him.
One Day managed to sneak in until the end when Laxmi (Esha Gupta), an officer of the crime branch, made his grand entrance. When Esha Gupta takes things in hand, all serious attempts on the major themes of the film are relegated to the background. Gupta has a squeaky Haryanvi accent, speaks hard and acts even harder. She continues to open and close files and replay records of data calls to show that she is serious. She is about as convincing as Anupam Kher as the smoothest criminal Ranchi has ever seen.
Kumud Mishra is his best professional as Sharma, a slow-moving police officer. The rest of the cast floats while Esha Gupta wrinkles her forehead and gesticulates furiously. The decision takes 124 minutes to be delivered, with frequent breaks for the item songs. Where are the fast courts when we need them?
