CHENNAI: The zonal unit of the Chennai Narcotics Control Bureau arrested a 32-year-old man who would be the mainstay of a drug racket involving pseudoephedrine throughout the country.
Based on information shared by the NCB unit in Chennai, the agency offices in Delhi and Mumbai seized 50 kg of the drug on May 20 and 22. This had resulted in the arrest of four residents of Chennai, an official statement said by A Bruno, the NCB's zone director in Chennai.
"Those arrested in Delhi and Mumbai implicated a resident of Chennai as a leader involved in pseudoephedrine trafficking from India to Malaysia. He was arrested just before attempting to escape by air by apprehending the action, "the statement said.
This resulted in the seizure of 49.5 kg of more pseudoephedrine in a fortress at Choolaimedu. The drug was allegedly smuggled into Malaysia.
NCB sources stated that the accused was identified as Sayed Gani, who operates a gift shop with his father in Mylapore.
Pseudoephedrine is a medicine for medical use. It is abused because of its stimulating effects, including a feeling of hyperactivity, an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. This precursor is the main raw chemical used in the manufacture of methamphetamine, an illicit drug.
