The release of his latest film, Bharat will only be in a month. Ask writer-director Ali Abbas Zafar how he feels and he says, "I'm hanging in there." Although he has delivered consecutive hits with Gunday (2014), Sultan (2016) and Tiger Zinda Hai (2017), says Zafar, the period before the release of a statement still looks like a review.
With regular collaborators Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif, Bharat . is an adaptation of the Korean film 2014 Ode to My Father and traces the career of his hero of more than 70 years. Zafar has maintained with Scroll.in on butterflies in the stomach and dreams that invaded him to create a style film Avengers- with Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn.
Why do you say you "hang in there"? This phase should already be familiar to you.
This phase corresponds to the period following the end of your Jury Examinations and you think you have been very successful, and you expect the day when the results will fall. Look at the recent CBSE results, by the way. The children of today score 99%. They turn into robots! Thank God, this kind of pressure did not exist for us, especially because I was not very good at academics.

So, what led you to tell stories?
I loved watching movies. I used to go to school and college to watch movies at the theater. Even now, I'm happier when I watch a movie or when I make a film. When I was at Kirori Mal College [in Delhi] I was part of the theater group. The college has some very good graduates, including Amitabh Bachchan, Satish Kaushik and Habib Faisal, who, over time, have left their mark on the Indian cinema fraternity.
I was studying biochemistry, but I could feel a shift towards art. and the cinema. I knew my parents would be unhappy if I told them I'm going to Mumbai to make movies. Nevertheless, I arrived in Mumbai in 2006 and started working as an badistant.
You seem to have a great love for the cinema of the 1970s.
Yes, it was the golden period of Indian cinema. There is no better balance between content, trade and narrative than the cinema of the 70s. Great filmmakers like Raj Kapoor, Yash Chopra, Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Manoj Kumar made incredible and profitable films, addressing people and raising issues of great relevance to society at that time. If we take this as a model, even today, cinema activity can go elsewhere.
Look at Avengers . It's a simple story of revenge, but the story of vengeance gives you the impression, oh my god, where's the world going? Likewise with Game of Thrones . If you see the world today and see what GOT did: The Whitewalkers represent terrorism and until we unite to fight it, it will kill us.
Cinema talks about a point of view and tells a story, and if you can do it keeping in mind the entertainment factor required by a mainstream commercial movie, you're done.
There is an impression of "Forrest Gump" in "Ode to my father". Did you incorporate that into "Bharat" too?
I think the creators of Ode were very impressed by Forest Gump . You see, if you try to present life for over 70 years, then it will lend itself to a narrative scheme similar to Forest Gump . The three movies are told in chapters because you have to link the story. The scenario structure is therefore similar, and each story in each chapter has a beginning, middle, and end with Characters that it meets only in the chapters of Bharat . I have not revealed the special characters of the trailer because there should be surprises for the public.
What kind of research did you put? in the 70-year period covered in "Bharat"?
This was the big part of the script. It took us a year and a half to research and write the film, because each chapter had to come from a precise timetable. For example, the migration that occurred in 1947 or the wave of unemployment that hit the country in the 1960s, then that of globalization – these events trigger the main plot.

You have worked several times with Salman Khan. Has the equation changed over the years?
No, it's always the same thing. Salman is always unpredictable, he always pulls my leg and has moods. We are very good off camera. He is almost like a big brother. We share everything. He has a great sense of humor and he also loves my sense of humor.
But when we get on the set, the director-actor relationship is very clear. Over time, we built trust and I love working with him. This is a big star and I think he has a very handsome actor that I have explored in Sultan and Tiger . We hope to have made progress in Bharat .
What about Katrina Kaif, who starred in your debut film, "Brother Mere Ki Dulhan & # 39; (2011)?
I think Katrina is in the best phase of his career: from Tiger Zinda Hai to Zero to Bharat . She flourishes as an actress. I think that sometimes what happens in your real life begins to be shown on camera, and the kind of experiences that she has experienced make her an actress with a lot of emotional depth. I would like to make a film with her that can exploit all her powers.
What are these powers?
I think she is beautiful and is fulfilled as an actress. When this combination occurs, you can write any text and it will fly. With Bharat you will also see a completely improved side of his tongue. We pushed him to speak Hindi regularly. We tweaked her and did some workshops and she was amazing.

Do you want to work with other actors?
I would like to work with other actors, but Bhai [Salman Khan] chhod hi nahi rahein hai mujhe. Of course, I hope that he will give me another movie to do, and I have a story for the next film Tiger that fascinates me. But I also really want to work with Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Ajay Devgn. I want to create my version of Avengers with the five of them.
