MOSCOW (AP) – The two best-known names in world football were eliminated from the World Cup on Saturday. But the first day of the knockout matches still had a lot of power.
Kylian Mbappe, the lightning of France, and Edinson Cavani, the silken veteran of Uruguay, each scored two goals as their teams eliminated Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo respectively
. This was the last World Cup event for Ronaldo (Portugal), 33, and Messi (Argentina), 31, and none of them approached a title. Mbappe is in the quarterfinals at the age of 19, where France will face the Uruguayan team led by teammate Cavalier of Paris Saint-Germain, Cavani and Luis Suarez
