The national actor Akshay Kumar was constantly controlled by social media to obtain his Canadian citizenship. Trolling increased after his absence from polling stations in Mumbai during the fourth phase of elections in Lok Sabha.

many netizens, including screenwriter Apurva Asrani, whose director Manoj Bajpayee Aligarh could not win the prize the same year, criticized the actor of Rustom on the micro-blogging site.
He wrote, "Are Canadian Citizens Eligible for the National Awards of India? Year (2016) Akshay Kumar Best Actor Award, We Expected Manoj Bajpayee to Win for Aligarh: If the jury / the ministry made a mistake in the case of Kumar, -vote? "

In clarification, Raees director Rahul Dholakia, who also served on the jury of the National Film Awards, launched on Twitter to support Akshay Kumar in a screenshot, "Clarification on national awards – foreign nationals can get national rewards.It is legal, legitimate and in the rules."
