The long-awaited thriller of Anubhav Sinha Article 15 allegedly inspired by the case of the rape and murder of Badaun seems to be heading into trouble.
The film, due to be released on June 28, has earned the brahmin community of Uttar Pradesh. The film was shot in Lucknow and the surrounding area with Ayushman Khurana. Brahmins are unhappy that the story has been "tweaked". With the intention of presenting the accused as Brahmins, they believe that it will defame the community
The trailer of the film, published last week, shows two girls from a village brutally raped and murdered, their bodies hanged a tree. It shows that girls – whose families are marginalized and forced to work as laborers – were targeted because they demanded an increase of 3 ₹ (3 ₹) in their daily wage.
The film shows how caste equations prevail in the region. The trailer also mentions that the crime was committed by a "Mahantji ke ladke". Mahantji is mentioned as a brahman of the highest order, which has upset the Brahmin community.
Scenes from the trailer show how much local residents believe the Dalits do not have the right to demand higher wages, and their status is only that that the "upper caste" judges good for them. Ayushman Khurana, who plays the role of investigating police officer, is a Brahmin and deals with the caste's case complexity.
The case of rape and murder in Badaun took place in 2014, when the Akhilesh Yadav government was in power in Uttar Pradesh. The accused were named Pappu Yadav, Avadhesh Yadav, Urvesh Yadav, Chhatrapal Yadav and Sarvesh Yadav. Chhatrapal and Sarvesh were police officers. The police department was accused of leniency towards the accused in this case due to political pressure from the Samajwadi party, which favored the Yadav.
"If the film is based on the Badaun incident, where was the need to turn the accused into Brahmins? It is obvious that the intention is to harm the Brahmin community. We have begun to raise awareness of this issue and we will not allow the release of the film here, "said Kushal Tiwari, a young student leader, member of the Brahmanian group Parshuram Sena.
Tiwari said that if the Thakurs could block the Padmaavat exit, why could not the Brahmins fight for their honor in this film? "We are launching a social media campaign and we are also trying to contact director Anubhav Singh, but he is not answering our calls," he said.
He added that the film was shot at the same time. Lucknow in March and April, they were not aware of the story and therefore did not protest.
The actor Manoj Pahwa, who plays an important role in the film, told a news agency: "The film is not completely based on the heinous crime that took place in Badaun where both girls were raped and hanged. This film is simply inspired by this incident and named "Article 15" which gives the right to equality for all. "
