Astronomers say that they have captured the first confirmed image of a planet forming in the dust swirling around a young star. They said that the planet appears as a bright spot in the snapshot taken using the very large telescope of the Southern European Observatory in Chile.
Miriam Kepler of the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Germany said that clues of baby planets have been detected before, but astronomers were not sure that these observations could simply be characteristics of swirling dust. In an article published in Astronomy & Astrophysics scientists describe the planet, located about three billion km from the star PDS 70, as a gaseous giant larger than Jupiter. It has a turbid atmosphere and a surface temperature of 1000 degrees Celsius.
