Imagine if Frankenstein was a woman. This is the base of Little Joe, a new film presented at this year's Cannes Film Festival.
British actress Emily Beecham received the best actress award at the festival's awards ceremony for her portrayal of Alice, the scientist who is creating a new film.
For Austrian director Jessica Hausner (Mad Love, Lourdes), reconstructing Frankenstein's story with a female track allowed her to explore contemporary concerns about genetic modification, corporate control – and motherhood.
"In my film, the character Alice is a scientist and she creates a kind of monster, it's a plant, a red flower," she explains in this Talking Movies clip. "But she's actually creating another monster, if you will, who is her child. The film speaks a lot about the ambiguity of his maternal love and his work. "
