Saragarhi was a small village of what was then called the North. -West border border, and is now close to the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan. It was crucial because it was between Fort Gulistan and Fort Lockhart and served as a signal post between them, as the two forts were not in the same line of sight.
Between August 27 and September 11, 1897, the Pasthuns and Afridi tribesmen tried in vain to take Fort Gulistan and Fort Lockhart. On September 11, 21 soldiers from the 36th Sikh Regiment of the British Indian Army were sent as reinforcements to Saragarhi to protect the post from attack.
On the morning of September 12, soldiers saw at least 10,000 Afghan soldiers accused. towards them with the aim of cutting the communication between the two forts. Signalman Gurmukh Singh called for reinforcements, but was told to "stay strong" until it was possible.
Led by Havildar Ishar Singh, the 21 Sikh soldiers valiantly fought the enemy over the next six hours. Afghan forces were caught unawares and offered them a safe pbadage, but refused to back down.
Afghan soldiers managed to cross the fortifications, but Havildar Ishar Singh and his men continued to fight vigorously. being short of ammunition and receiving no reinforcement.
Havildar Ishar Singh remained on the outer periphery, fighting wave after wave of Afghan troops and allowing his soldiers to defend themselves from the inner sanctuaries of the fort.
As the number of Sikh victims increased and only four men remained standing, Signalman Gurmukh Singh sought permission to enter the battlefield and eventually killed nearly 20 enemy soldiers with just a bayonet. The Afghans finally had to set it on fire to kill him.
Although the 21 soldiers were martyred, they managed to inflict heavy losses on the enemy. They posthumously received the Indian Order of Merit, the highest award of gallantry awarded at the time to Indian soldiers.
