"Boyz N the Hood" and "2 Fast 2 Furious" were elected to the 51

American screenwriter and filmmaker John Singleton died Monday in Los Angeles at the age of 51, his family said in a statement.

Singleton had been hospitalized about two weeks ago after suffering a stroke. Earlier Monday, his family had announced the deadline to deprive him of his life-saving treatment. "It was an atrocious decision, which our family took for several days with the thoughtful advice of John's doctors," said a family representative at the publication.

Born to John Daniel Singleton on January 6, 1968, he enrolled in a film writing clbad at the University of Southern California at age 18, where he began working on the screenplay from Boyz N the Hood (1991). His first film will become a cultural phenomenon and a landmark for African-American representation.

Boyz n the Hood earned him the distinction of being the youngest director and the first African-American nominated for Best Director. Oscar and he also asked for a nomination for Best Original Screenplay. With rapper Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Morris Chestnut, the film traces three black teenagers growing up in the midst of gang violence and drugs in a Los Angeles ghetto. The film was also screened in the Un Certain Regard section of the Cannes Film Festival in 1991.

Other films highlighting the life and struggles of African-Americans followed with Janet Jackson-starrer The Poetic Justice (1993), of Rosewood . (1997) and Samuel L Jackson-starrer Shaft (2000) and a continuation of the 1971 film of the same name.

While Poetic Justice follows the life of a young hairdresser trying to cope with the death of her boyfriend by her poems, Rosewood with Don Cheadle, Jon Voight and Ving Rhames, based on the Rosewood Mbadacre in Florida in 1923, where many blacks were lynched by a white crowd.

Another drama occurring in a ghetto followed with Baby Boy (2001), on a bicycle mechanic (Tyrese Gibson). who learns lifestyles in a Los Angeles neighborhood. The film co-starring Omar Gooding, Taraji P Henson, AJ Johnson and rapper Snoop Dogg.

His other credits include 2 Fast 2 Furious (2003), the second installment of the franchise The Fast and Furious and revenge drama. Four Brothers (2005) starring Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson and André Benjamin. His latest film was an action thriller Abduction (2011), in which Taylor Lautner is a young man who seeks to discover the truth about his childhood after the murder of his parents.

Singleton spent his last years working. on television, where he directed episodes for shows such as Empire (2015) and American Crime Story (2016). He also co-created the popular drama on the theme of drug addiction Snowfall (2017).
