Chhattisgarh polls: Congress issues manifesto and promises agricultural advice

RAJNANDGAON: Congressman Rahul Gandhi on Friday released the party manifesto for Chhattisgarh, which promises an agricultural loan waiver, a minimum support price for crops in accordance with the Swaminathan commission's recommendations and a ban of the sale of alcohol.

The state will go to the polls in two phases, November 12 and 20, and the vote count will be held on December 11.

Gandhi publishes the manifesto titled "Jan Ghoshna Patra" in Rajnandgaon, which is the constituency of Chief Minister Raman Singh.

Speaking at a press conference on this occasion, Mr. Gandhi said that loans to farmers would be canceled within 10 days of the party coming to power.

The MSP for paddy will be set at 2,500 rupees per quintal and maize at 1,700 rupees per quintal, Gandhi said.

The manifesto also promised to halve electricity bills for domestic consumers, as well as provide housing and land for urban and rural families.

In the party's "Ghar Ghar Rozgaar, Har Ghar Rozgaar" program, the manifesto highlights apprenticeship programs and employment opportunities for young people.

He also promised a monthly allowance to 10 unemployed young lakhs as part of the party of the party "Rajiv Mitr Yojana".

The Manifesto mentioned the establishment of special women's police stations, women's rescue cells in police stations and the strict enforcement of women's laws.

A policy will be developed to address the threat of naxalism and serious steps will be taken for the talks, Gandhi said, adding that each Naxal-affected panchayat would receive a package of Rs. community development work.

Special laws will be promulgated to protect journalists, lawyers and doctors, he added.

In forest areas such as Lemru and Korba, elephant sanctuaries and wildlife will be set up and steps will be taken to reduce the human-elephant conflict, Gandhi added.

Gandhi on Friday organized a roadshow in Rajnandgaon City and organized three rallies in Pakhanjore (Kanker District), Khairagarh and Dongargarh (Rajnandgaon District) for the first round of voting, on November 12.

In the 2013 badembly polls, the BJP won 49 seats, Congress 39, BSP 1 and 1 independent seats in the House of 90 deputies.
